My Omnia experience (so far)

I'm posting this as a very brief review of the Omnia and the things I've done to tweak it so far. I'm hoping this will help people shopping for phones find their way to the Omnia.

About me: Mid 30's something business user. Long time WinMobile user. Most recently had an XV6700 for 3 years. I know and accept that winmo has its bugs and problems. That being said... for all the reasons I hated my XV6700, I LOVE my Omnia.

I've had the Omnia for about 10 days now. Here is a list of what I've done:

---Install the .net 3.5 framework and the cab that forces winmo to use it. This is a MUST DO! Noticeably increases speed of the interface. Probably by 30% or more.

---Install the reghack that enables Samsung Today 2
This interface is much better than the widgets. Its simple, clean, and enables me to move about the phone quickly and easily with one hand while I sprint through an airport.

---Install Slide to Unlock
This is mostly eyecandy... but I think its pretty useful eycandy.

---Install Internet Connection Sharing
Another MUST DO. Easy and allows a high speed connection for your computer whenever and wherever you want.

---Install Manila2d
I'm actually not a fan of this one. There are some things that don't work (landscape views), and it seems there is alot involved in making this liveable. I also feel that its alot of eyecandy, and not much else. I find myself working much harder to accomplish a task with this than I do the Samsung Today 2. I haven't given up yet... just not convinced its for me.

After all of these tweaks... I LOVE THIS PHONE. Its fast, stable, and easy to use. Opera makes the internet useable on a small screen. I actually enjoy reading a web page instead of avoiding it. I also find that I love Windows Mobile Media Player. The optical mouse makes Media player extremely easy to manipulate. Great battery life, easy to use, lots of entertainment. Yep... I love this phone.

My wish list:
---Unlocked GPS
---Figure out how to display text messages without including the whole text conversation. One message at a time is all I need. Don't want to read the conversation I've been having with my wife for the last 10 days via text.

Hope this helps someone just starting with an Omnia, or deciding to buy one. You won't be dissapointed.
This post has been thanked 1 times.

Re: My Omnia experience (so far)

I have done most of the tweaks you mentioned and agree (i have slide to unlock, and im not sure what everyone loves so much about it, especially with this phone, i just click the top button once before i put it in my pocket and i dont worry about accidentally hitting keys)
as for your desire to see just one text at a time, that is something i found usefull about the manila 2d today screen...its text message option works like that. I dont like how it doesnt work in landscape, so i turned off the tilt sensor and mapped a key (camera single press) to switch views into landscape for when i want to view something in landscape.

Re: My Omnia experience (so far)

I'm glad to hear you are enjoying your Omnia as much as I am. After some tweaks this phone is a great multi-purpose device.

For getting rid of the threaded SMS see Item 58 in the link provided below...

As far as unlocked GPS, it is on the way (at least that is what Verizon is telling us) and hopefully we will see it within the next few months.

hop2000....GREAT THREAD in your link. Thanks for that!

dopepope.... your right about manila2d. It looks great if you are just reading the messages, but when you try to reply to one, it just takes me right back to the same threaded messages as before.

Smilepak... I've thought about SPB mobile shell.... just wasn't sure if it was worth spending $ on. I'll take a harder look at it.

You can download a free trial for spb mobile shell to try it out before you make the decision to buy it.

1) First make sure you have .NET Compact 3.5 installed

2) Do registry fix

Re: My Omnia experience (so far)

I'll try out the speed-up app posted here, but I highly recoment SPB Shell...especially when using Imache's skinning app.....makes Shell much more versitile and customizable!!!

Stole this from the Hacks/tip/tricks thread.
I would just like to warn everyone about this hack. While it appeared to make some things snappier (still not convinced its not a placebo), it caused more issues than it fixed.

Some apps specifically look for 2.1 to be the default. I can't remember which now, but I do recall my last hard reset, that was one of the first tweaks I did, and I had all sorts of problems installing applications. THey would give me a .netCF initialization error. Reverting the setting fixed the problem.

Just an FYI.
