Re: Epic 4G vs. Evo Shift 4G. Which is the phone to get? Why?

Here is why I am getting the epic.

- bigger screen
- reported better video / pictures
- full keyboard
- Hardware decoding for video built in
- button on camera. Tried a reverse picture on the evo non shift and it took me forever to hit the on screen button.
- better visibility in sunlight (do alot of mp3 streaming by the pool)

nice things but not part of decision

- brighter display in sunlight
- processor may be able to complete unique activities better
- navigation keys on keyboard

Wondering items
- does extra rom on shift make it faster, we know what ram means to our pc's
- could shift be a great battery life phone? I carry 3 batteries plus extended ones for my tp2 figure I will always need too.
- never seen the epic but will blue tint nag me
- was happy to see all the buying options for evo.... epic seems minimal.
- will 2/7 bring anything more than a dual screen phone that doubles as tablet
- what does bluetooth 3.0 bring to the epic? Would love to park the epic in the car and listen to bluetooth music inside the gym.
- hoping the benchmark tests that showed the shift slightly faster overall did not have the upload limiter fix on it and that a new up to date with the new os will reverse the findings.

Wish list
-tilting display like tp2. I used that all the time and very convenient.
- love the evo larger screen and ability to one hand text when needed pretty nicely. Hoping I dont regret just going back to 4.0. %age wise thats a big jump.

Leaving the evo non shift due to lack of keyboard. Tried the TP2 again today and I forgot how fast I can type on that keyboard. I will save hours / days / weeks off my life if the epic keyboard is anywhere near the feel of the tp2 one.

I hope the speaker is louder and has more bass than on the epic for a portable music player.

Where the heck is sprint motorola? They used to make some great quality phones.

going to rest up now for the steelers game!

Rom is not ram...that said both are the same..rom and ram..

I don't think the shift has better battery life truthfully..that said for my Epic I bought 2 batteries + external battery charger for 7$ on ebay..and the batteries inside the Epic are half the size as the ones inside a TP2 while still being 1500mah...

I doubt it...but you have 30 days to try it out..judge for yourself..

Unknown and those that do are under NDA..

Bluetooth 3.0 allows for Bluetooth to authenticate the connection then use WIFI for the actual transfer..aka its more for file transferring wirelessly without broadcasting WIFI publicly..that said we are not sure if Epic even has Bluetooth 3.0 :/

What benchmark? also performance can depend on area..

You can always turn the screen horizontally...but I don't think it will be an issue vertically either...

Its no TP2..BUT its pretty good.. just gotta get used to it...one thing I would suggest is getting a thing which disables swype when you take out the hardware kb..for some reason swype can conflict for fast typers..hopefulyl sprint will fix it but the workaround works fine too..

Re: Epic 4G vs. Evo Shift 4G. Which is the phone to get? Why?

Been reading the responses on here and I couldn't help but laugh. Half the people giving advice here need to stop and read some articles from people who actually have a clue about what they are doing and should do some side comparisons and stop the lying.

The epic is a better phone, but only marginally so in benchmarks and real world tests. The evo does not even come close to comparing to either the shift or the epic. It is almost 1 year old and it is showing its age. So if you think the evo is better than shift don't post it here you just sound like a bitter wanna be techie defending his phone, with little to nothing to back it up. The camera and the hdmi is the only thing the og evo has over it. Also the processor on the evo and the epic are not as good as the shift.

The epic does beat it out with the screen and the camera, but is on par with the shift in real world tests and benchmarks.

Yes dual core second gen cpu's will be faster but are gonna have a horrible battery life because they require much more power to run.

And since I am not one to talk out of my ass like all the wanna be techies here I will post my data.

HTC Evo Shift 4G (Sprint) - Benchmark Test Results

In just about every benchmark the evo gets stomped. And since I know all you wanna be techies will try and say otherwise, all I will say is prove what you say with hard evidence. Show me real world video or benchmarks that show the evo as a better phone.

Just don't post any more ignorant info.

i dont like the way you speak of the epic. we all know the shift beats the og evo, but not the epic by even a little bit. here are some benchmarks for you to review before you return your little evo shift and get the epic.(because it a waaayyyy better phone than the evo shift.

and thats against an epic running 2.1 with no "jit". just wait till we see 2.2

While I do agree that the Shift and Epic are superior by a decent margin hardware wise, some of your information is a little flawed...

for example, the link you gave..I can tell you 100% has Epic and Evo both running 2.1 instead of 2.2...

I will go over every benchmark for you..

FPS2D: In this category Evo has 30fps, this shows the benchign of Evo was done before the 30fps cap was lifted that was caused by the HDMI..the Epic is also FPS capped in the benchmark to 55-56fps..it still capped at that now but we have a hack to lift it..

An3DBench: not too familiar with this one but I'm sure FPS cap is effecting them both as its a GPU benchmark..also to note is Epic dithers at 24bit while snapdragons dither at 16bit..this gives Epic lower scores then it really should have if it was equal..

Linpack: The most flawed benchmark there is..well one of the..this is how I knew Evo was running 2.1, the snapdragons have an VFP which is a virtual floating point accelerator..which effectively makes all floating point benchmarks useless on the Evo and Evo shift or any snapdragon based phone running 2.2 as your not testing the CPU power, your testing the VFP..

NBench: I am not exactly familiar with this benchmark tool..but I don't see why the shift looses to an Evo on a memory benchmark..this shouldn't be..

Benchmark: Judging by the scores I am guessing this is Quadrant Pro..the CPU score is same story as linpack

Nenamark: Same as An3DBench..

As for the Dual Cores...they will not use up more energy..why do you think they will? The Dual Cores are based on Cortex A9 architecture rather then the older Cortex A8, this gives it power saving right there..not to mention most of them have smaller dye sizes..Tegra 2 for example is 40nm..some others are even 32nm and 28nm...this saves a lot of battery..

Also dual core is not something that will just waste power as most of the time the CPU is in idle, when use is necessary the Dual Core CPU will process data faster then a single core..thus save power..think of it like cars..with 10 gallons of gas, you will reach more miles per gallon traveling 20 miles an hour rather then 80 miles an hour..

That said Dual Cores won't even be able to use both cores till Honeycomb :/

Original Evo is still selling more product then Epic. There must be a reason for it. I'm thinking it's because it's a better phone.

Re: Epic 4G vs. Evo Shift 4G. Which is the phone to get? Why?

The original EVO (which I chose over the Epic) is probably selling better due to advertising as well as it just being sexier (in my opinion and in the opinion of many if not most EVO owners) The Epic is a better phone and if you have a hard time typing on the screen... It's WAYYYYY better... But the beauty is in the fact that we have a choice. I have no trouble typing on the screen and the auto correction on the EVO is amazing. I also talk my texts wile driving by clicking the microphone. It's voice to speech software is pretty spot on. The EVO Shift is for a different customer. It does get amazing battery life... I have done ZERO battery tweaks to my wife's Shift... No juice defender, I didn't turn off google talk, she has hepatic feedback turned on and she's not a power user by any means but she uses it off and on throughout the day. And lets my son play angry birds for long periods of time... She sometimes forgets to put it on the charger at night and she still has enough battery to last her the work day at the office. It does have to be noted that she maybe makes a call and answers a couple of texts while at work. Nothing else.
But as I've said before... The shift is marketed at a different bunch. She thinks the EVO is AWESOME in MY hand... NEVER in hers. She loves her Shift due to the keyboard and the size.
They are all good phones.

Best???
Is up to the individual.
I like the EVO, My wife likes the Shift, Others like the Epic...
Next year, It'll be a different story.

You do know that even though smart phones are popular trend, many dumb phones still outsell them..so if your statement is true would mean that a dumb phone is better then an Evo? O.o...yeah I figured as much...as stated, Evo sales are mostly attributed to the advertising..I am not saying it wouldn't get sales otherwise..just advertising makes up a lot of it, if not most of it..most people didn't even know the Epic existed even after it came out where as sprint advertised the Evo months before..

gTen. come on man. Sprint is advertising the Epic like a mofo. Come on. Have some original ideas and stop carrying water for the man. You must own stock in Samsung.
