Re: 3+ weeks w/ the pre (vs sprint touch pro)

I have to agree with the people who prefer the Pre. At this point, WebOS is a really exciting platform that is easy to hack and to develop for. It's open, has a great app store, and it's powerful, sexy, slick, smooth, new, etc.

People who are addicted to ROMs, etc, would feel really at-home with the Pre. Instead of having to flash a new ROM, and LOSE EVERYTHING when some new feature is discovered, you just edit a tiny bit of code. WebOS is most 'interpreted,' so you can edit things on-the-fly.

I don't think I'll give WM another chance until WM7, but who knows. I love that it took, what 5 days for the homebrew community to make a program that works better than WMwifirouter... the stuff that is coming up is outstanding quality.

Re: 3+ weeks w/ the pre (vs sprint touch pro)

Swapping roms every other day gets kinda old and just reminds you of the shortcomings of windows. Maybe wm7 will actually give us something to talk about. 6.5 isn't showing me anything good coming from windows

Re: 3+ weeks w/ the pre (vs sprint touch pro)

Wanted to post another update.. Still in love w/ my pre..

One of the shortcomings I listed is lack of a podcast player.. I've found two really good solutions for this - one web-based (netvibes.com), and one homebrew (prepod) - both work great for podcasts..

I've been in Europe for the past week on vacation, and actually brought three wifi devices - touch pro, palm pre, and ipod touch 2g.. I've barely touched the other two devices. (the touch pro came on once because I was using tomtom gps on it..) - gotta say, the wifi implementation on the pre is so much nicer then wm6's... (wifi turns instantly on and doesn't suck battery) - also the Pre gets better wifi reception then my ipod 2g..

Updates so far have been frequent, and the daily homebrew apps are exciting to keep up with... As long as Palm keeps the Pre open, then this is a winning platform.

If you set the iphone, pre, and TP side by side, you will have people that prefer each one over the other two. The TP is a weak phone with the stock operating system, plain and simple. In my experience, so are most other windows mobile devices. Bottom line is, windows mobile is for people who enjoy tweaking/modding their phone. If you are willing to take the time to do the necessary mods, windows mobile will blow any other phone/os out of the water, but out of the box, both the iphone and the pre blow the TP out of the water. My biggest complaint with the pre, is the same as my biggest complaint with the iphone. It is too user friendly. The pre and the iphone are both flashy, neat little devices, but they both lack the functionality and multitasking ability of windows mobile. bottom line is, there is no way to determine which device is the better device, because it depends on the person using it. I have direct access to all three phones, and i still wouldnt trade my TP for anything on the market right now. even so, the pre definately is a nice phone, with alot of nice features, and well worth looking into if you find windows mobile too cumbersome.

I agree with your point. WinMo is better with a custom Rom and is a better phone after tweaking the hell out of it. I love Palm, for years I had the Tungsten C, Treo 755p and the TX and preferred Palm over WinMo anytime...until HTC came along. I had the Mogul and now the Touch Pro...I understand Palm has a newer OS, I had played with it at the Sprint store. Not bad, but definitely not an Iphone killer and and not even close to the Touch Pro. I disagree with you calling the Pre "flashy"... it is horrible looking. With the keyboard- out looks like a rock with a big chin...

Hit it out of the ballpark!

Re: 3+ weeks w/ the pre (vs sprint touch pro)

The only reason I got rid of my Touch Pro was to save my relationship w/ my wife an kids. I spent more time flashing ROMs and modding, let alone working all day. Dont get me wrong like any other ppcgeek I enjoy every second of a ROM flash. And collaborating w/ other on minor tweaks and etc. I just the Pre because it just works great at multitasking data based applications etc. I hadnt even unlocked it yet, minus the very small hardware flaws Im not ashame to admit. webOS OTA updates will be the deal closer.

I will not bad mouth the Touch Pro as long as it has TF3D2 WM65..!O!
And I will not return my Palm Pre, to many OTA updates to come...!O!

Enjoy what's on your night stand tonight...peace

Re: 3+ weeks w/ the pre (vs sprint touch pro)

I went from a Touch Pro to Pre for a while and here are my observations:

1 Development and applications for the Pre is still very limited
2 Basic utility and quality as a phone are quite bad on the Pre. Reception is markedly worse than the touch Pro. Audio quality on handset and speakerphone on the Pre are poor.
3 Build quality of the Pre is about as bad as it gets. A basic quality control is either missing or they decided that problems with a fairly obvious part of the handset, the screen, can be passed of to customers. I went through three Pres with serious blotchyness at the base of the screens until I figured out that Pre=bad screens
4 The GPS in the Pre is bad. It won't start without a Sprint signal even with non web dependent calls to GPS data
5 Proper integration into enterprise still missing
6 no video camera. (WTF?)
7 Editing docs handicapped

I hope Palm moves forward on the hardware, which is the root of most of their problems. But they also seem to cater to the carriers in limiting utility, the GPS being one sign.

Re: 3+ weeks w/ the pre (vs sprint touch pro)

Well I will be adding to this thread later this week. I am picking up my Pre tomorrow as my 3rd Touch Pro keyboard died today on unit that I had for 2 weeks... I'm tired of replacing them.

I just got into flashing roms recently with the TP, and found a few I liked but never was fully satisfied due to little bugs here and there. I would love the phone to death if it actually worked as it was suppose to and it was dependable. I must reset my TP 2 times a day, and my batter life is terrible!

I'm nervous about switching to the Pre though. There was so much I liked about the TP, and I'm worried about what I'm giving up. I have 30 days to return the Pre if I don't like it, and by then 6.5 drops so who knows what will happen....

I'll post my experience with the Pre up this week, from and early take to a few days into it.
