Talking Distinct my ......

I'd love for MS to get their act together and deliver an improved UI with half of the ease of use of the iPhone, but I'm not holding my breath. The other thing I found pretty hilarious was the emphasis on how the motions/gestures would be distinct and wouldn't be "over-loaded", yet every description of a feature or new software ended with the end-user shaking the hell out of their phone. Will rubberized cases come standard?

The interface looks cool, but I'm not sure I'll be shaking my phone all too much. You know, people will be like WTF are you doing and all.

Yeah I am going to love shaking my $500 dollar phone ... that really looks stupid and impractical. Just give us VGA support/drivers, finger scrolling, smart zooming.

Then some upstart Japanese company can create a solid compact shell to house it with slightly recessed hardware buttons, a 3mp camera and a keyboard like the Tilt.

Too bad we will never see this on cdma

Re: Windows Mobile 7 - A Peek - MERGED

This looks nice. It's about time Microsoft opened up. I knew they had it in em. Let's just hope things are not rushed now that the opened the floodgates.

Re: Windows Mobile 7 - A Peek - MERGED

The screens all seem to point to high end feature rich phones, which would be great.

It seems like you can't have one without the other though, imagine that burst mode camera rotate baby shot on the Apache handset, 1.3mp crappy camera.... Defeats the purpose much?

On another note, having used an accellerometer on a phone for a while. I found some simple N95 programs like rotate, flipsilent and shakelock create a very usable and much less "silly looking" natural interface than I first expected.

Re: Windows Mobile 7 - A Peek - MERGED

Not having an accel/gyroscope on mobile devices was just a stupid oversight by MS and other hardware manufacturers... I have it on my Toshiba M200 tablet PC and it's useful. I hope Windows 7 will come to current HTC touch devices, even without the "waggle" features. We need a new UI... plus if they do enable the ATi Imageon, current devices with the MSM7x00 chipsets would run it very well.

Note, for all those nifty UI features (multi-touch, shaking/rotating sensing) you'll need new hardware, since the current hardware can only sense a single touch point, and lacks the accelerometer needed for sensing orientation/shaking/turrets syndrome.

Its nice that Microsoft knows how to copy. It would be really cool if they could learn to innovate. But hey, at least they can copy.
I know you were just being snarky but why is it that every iphone fan has to start with "Yawn"? Seriously they do it on engadget, here, and all the other tech forums. That's just nuts. I'm pretty sure there were Palms and PPCs before Apple came along and offered up the most recent polished version of a smart phone. They weren't the first and they won't be the last. They just currently have a good device out that will see some of its features become commonplace and others fall by the wayside. The air of boredom you get from Apple fans just makes them come off as snide. Personally I'm glad to see competition and I'm glad whenever anyone improves on an old design. If Palm learned that lesson they wouldn't be in such trouble. Right now the vast majority of smartphones run Microsoft, Palm, Apple, and Symbian OSes. I would hate to see any of those just give up on modernizing their OS but I guess we have projects like Android to look forward to.

I have the same tablet. Got it off ebay for $350 last summer. It's no powerhouse but it's a great lightweight tablet for a good price.

I thought they learned after Windows 98 not to rush. Then Windows ME proved me wrong. Then WM5 proved me wrong again!

THEN, there was Vista...

WM7 will be rushed, I am sure
