If none of the programs is using the internet, it is technically idle...however, in order to keep the internet connection alive, there need to be packets sent and received continuously. Just like on any other network connection.

Bottom line is that having an active internet connection reduces battery life. Using the internet actively drains it even faster. The same goes for 3G vs 2G. Some people are falling back to 2G if they are not using the internet for the very same reason.

If you say so. All i know is my device is connected to the net 24/7 and it has never effected my battery performance. Even with 2 or 3 programs that need to access the net randomly for there usage and i still make it a whole day away from home unless i'm using the gps heavily.

Agreed. We had this same discussion in the 700wx forum about a year ago. I think we concluded that if there is any drain on your battery from having an idle connection that it is unnoticeable.

And if these packets are being sent I'm pretty sure that the connectivity time to send them is at most a second or two.

late,
Coz
