It depends on the software ur using. The chip only acquire signal from the satelite and does the nessesary computation and work together with ur map for the direction.

Re: htc touch gps

All A-GPS types does the same function to navigate. It's just the process of computing for data is different. Standalone does the computing onboad as the name implied. ms implied, ms assisted and hybrid needs assistance from ur carriers A-GPS servers. A-GPS servers does the computaion for ur mobile phones coz they have more powerful processors and to save U battery life. It will then be uploaded to ur mobile phone. This happens in 10ths of a seconds.

Well, gentlemen, you accomplished your goal and confused the noob
I've read the discussion and the tutorial jethro linked and I see the following:
Touch and Mogul have stand alone GPS (and Tilt, Q9C, BB 8830), which will function without the network, like MattOktaNZ's in NZ without CDMA network.
While on network the GPS will function as GPS-A giving you the benefit of network assisted GPS. Depending on mode it will either use data connection or not.
Using map data off mSD card does not require a data plan.
Having Touch withouth data plan is like eating a bagel without the shmear.
If you are not smiling yet, read my user name again.

I know your familiar with that already. A-GPS has 4 types including the standalone. Standalone does not need a data plan. If u don't have AT&T tilt, moto Q9c and blackberry device, U don't have a standalone chip on ur phone. So for the rest of us, we will pay for data. U ask why do we need data? Well this is how it works. The GPS satellite will locate ur position. The satellite then communicate with cell towers about ur whereabout. Then the info will be processed at a nearby A-GPS servers. The A-GPS servers will then transfer the computed data to ur phone. Now you ask, Why does the A-GPS server do the computations? Because they have a significantly more powerful processors than ur phone. It's faster when they do the computations. And most importantly, To save your batery. It will drain your batery doing this calculations. Now U ask, So where the data plan comes in place. Here's your answer. How will the A-GPS servers transfer the DATA to ur phone? here are your options, Voice plan? text messaging plan? Or DATA plan? Now you tell me how to transfer Data to your phone if the answer is not in the 3 options? yah digg? if U do. Hit that T.
Dude....I have a Mogul and a reburbished Touch that are neither activated, and I activated the GPS through custom ROMS, and the GPS on BOTH work and work well with TOMTOM 6 installed. SO, you are very wrong about needing a data plan, or even needing cellular service at ALL.

Transmission of what data?? If you already have Maps installed with TOMTOM, for example, then no exchange of data is needed at all. The transmission of data is only needed if map information is being constantly downloaded with programs like GoogleMaps and Live Search because you are getting the maps Via the internet. If you have maps installed on your pda then data is NOT NEEDED, and Cellular service is also not needed (unless your in an area where youre not in satellite view and thats when a-gps kicks in and it will use the cellular towers for triangulation) MSM 7500 chip works as a Standalone GPS just as any Garmin, TOMTOM, MIO...ect would. It is no different, and just as these, the Touch need no cellular service or data connection in order to use TOMTOM, GARMIN or any other navigation app that already has preinstalled maps.

LOL The purpose of my explanation is to understand how A-GPS and Your carriers role of implementing it. I am not talking about just 1 device. I am talking about the whole A-GPS technology on mobile devices. There are exceptions. It's so funny people starts reading at the last posts then think that they already know how the whole thread went. It is so funny.

Thats only because you cannot download TOMTOM or Garmin or have maps preloaded on standard phones. Any A-GPS enabled smartphone, PPC, blackberry will have the ability to store navigation maps and therefore not have the need for data transmissions other than sattelite info.
