If it's truely doing it's job, doesn't it completely clear the memory as part of the flash? These types of phones have been around for a while, is it THAT Hard for the programmers at HTC/Microsoft to develop a flash method that truely & fully clears the ROM before reprogramming it? I know for sure it gets rid of all my files, so why is a multiple hard reset necessary to get it working right??????

I've got an IT degree with CS minor and have been working in the field managing networks/systems for 15 years. When I format a hard drive while I know you can get the data back with the right tools I've NEVER seen Windows/Linux/whatever just randomly start serving up old files and crashing that would require multiple formats/reinstalls...so why do we have to do this with our PPC phones?

I'm not whining or picking a fight, I REALLY want to know on a technical level why this is necessary...
I dont have alot of time...But to answer your question...Doing a flash is equal to installing an OS onto a hard drive. A hard reset is the equivalent of performing a Format on the hard drive, THEN installing the OS. Would you ever install an OS without doing a format?

There's no harm to doing it (it doesn't seem wipe your SD card or anything), but I've yet to see a reason for doing it either.

Re: When do you Hard reset after a new flash?

*researches*

Ok here's the deal: there is no NAND Flash memory in the HTC Touch Pro, since it uses removable SD cards instead. If you're a TP user and click that box, you're wasting your time (but not hurting anything either).

However, the HTC Touch Diamond does use NAND Flash technology, 4 gigs of it in fact, since it does not have SD card accessability. I haven't tested this, but I assume clicking that box on a Diamond will wipe your 4 gig flash memory.

You'll note the option to format NAND flash isn't available on stock TP ROMs. That's because it's useless and confusing. Since many ROM chefs here develop for both devices, it's most likely a function brought over from their work on Diamonds.

Re: When do you Hard reset after a new flash?

I never do the extra hard reset on any device after flashing a rom and I don't have any issues at all. Doing so shouldn't hurt anything and if it makes you happy, have fun. From an electrical engineering standpoint, there is no valid reason to do so when the flashing process already performs a wipe. From a programming standpoint, again, no valid reason for doing so.

I figure, if it makes you happy, go for it. Given the MTBF for flash memory on these devices, you won't over write to it in the time period you'll keep your phone anyway.

Just remember, just because it's written on a public forum doesn't necessarily mean it's true based on factual information. In the 1300's the earth was flat too.

I never do a second flash, however, I'm not saying my method is gospel, merely choice!

Re: When do you Hard reset after a new flash?

Uh, I've always just done one flash on my 6700 and now the 6850 and NEVER found leftover files, which means it already does a format as part of the flash (as it should!). There should be no reason to do a second hard reset after you let it run through, it does one as part of the flash. I know that doing it multiple times won't hurt anything , but it shouldn't normally help either.

Hmm, on that thought, is it REALLY possible for the flash/OS reload to partially fail without telling you and leaving you with a borked install? If so they should have built in a verify process like you can do when you burn a DVD...

Re: When do you Hard reset after a new flash?

I agree. I find doing a system clear after installing a new OS is about as redundant as doing an FFR, updating to all the latest MS KB releases, and doing it again "just to be sure". I never have done a master reset after flashing a new ROM, and I've never had an issue out of it. To me, it makes about as much sense as this sequence of events:

1. Fdisk to wipe out partitions
2. Format HDD
3. Install WXP
4. Update it to latest fixes and drivers
Install AV, firewall, and antispyware.
5. Scan system to make sure clear
6. Fdisk to wipe out partitions
7. Format HDD
8. Install WXP
9. Update it to latest fixes and drivers
Install AV, firewall, and antispyware.
10. Install applications
11. Use OS.

IMO, steps 6-9 can be eliminated with no issues whatsoever.
