Not so much. The gravitational force an object experiences drops off as the inverse square of the distance.

I think this just confirms we are definitely a PPC forum and not a physics forum.

Re: Is there a Google Maps w/ Streetview AND G-Sensor working?

Look everyone, this is how accelerometers work:

Why does it matter how the accelerometer on our phones is calibrated? Because the accelerometer (reading data from the accelerometer) zeros-out the effects of gravity when calibrated in a certain orientation. These things detect Earth’s gravity just by sitting there. Try re-orienting the phone after incorrectly calibrating it. What happens? Now it thinks “down” is in another direction. It doesn’t need to move to detect this force because it is constantly detecting it.

Think of accelerometers as a series of springs. Depending on how much a spring is stressed in one direction, the accelerometer outputs a value corresponding to that stress. If you hang a string over the ground with a weight attached, it’ll stretch. If you somehow remove Earth’s gravity from the situation, it will contract.

Now let’s go laterally. If you start moving to the left from a stand-still, you’ve accelerated. This acceleration continues until you’ve reached, say, 5 m/s. Now your velocity isn’t changing and, how about that, the accelerometer’s output goes to zero. Here’s where it gets kind of cool: you can measure the distance you’ve traveled knowing your velocity hasn’t changed over a certain amount of time. What happens when you stop? Now your accelerometer picks up a force going in the other direction. You start slowing down at a rate of -1m/s^2. If this goes on for 5 seconds, you’ll stop. The spring changes shape during the accelerations and returns to normal during all other points of the trip. These deformations account for the data coming out of the accelerometer.

Just keep in mind what I said before:

Also, acceleration is measured in m/s/s or m/s^2. m/s is a speed.

That being said, you should still be able to 'pan' by moving the phone left/right.

Not sure if the phone can d/l and process the data for display fast enough to make this useful... YMMV...

Theoretically, you're right, but I've heard rumors that the G1 accomplishes this by use of a compass. I can see how a compass could make things more absolute and reliable for knowing which direction you're facing, but from personal experience with the G1, the implementation was pretty bad. I would rotate the phone around me and it would move only marginally left or right. I even tried rotating the phone about the center of its own axis to no avail.

It's not really all that much data. Some programs are posted over at XDA that can be used to measure car performance. It's all about the sampling rate which I think was pretty high. Look at the game Tilt that came with our phones. The ball reacts pretty quickly.

EDIT: Here's a great post that covers all this pretty well:

Sure the accelerometer is fast, I am talking about downloading street view maps, I am not sure that the TP can download that data process it for display fast enough, unless it caches a bunch of streetview data before letting you flip the phone around to change views... I am talking about LAG from downloading the images...
