Theoretically, you're right, but I've heard rumors that the G1 accomplishes this by use of a compass. I can see how a compass could make things more absolute and reliable for knowing which direction you're facing, but from personal experience with the G1, the implementation was pretty bad. I would rotate the phone around me and it would move only marginally left or right. I even tried rotating the phone about the center of its own axis to no avail.

It's not really all that much data. Some programs are posted over at XDA that can be used to measure car performance. It's all about the sampling rate which I think was pretty high. Look at the game Tilt that came with our phones. The ball reacts pretty quickly.
