Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

OK, so I suggest everyone try the "sweaty hands" test on this. Hold your phone in your hand for a good 15-20 minutes, long enough to get some sweat goin' on. Then take a look at your hand. My battery cover is bleeding/fading onto my hand like crazy. And yes, I did buff it... for like 15 minutes.... twice. I even ran it under some warm water and scrubbed it with a sponge for a few minutes. The color still looks fine, but even after all that it still bleeds off with a little perspiration.

And question: Are you guys leaving your heat on while the cover is submerged in the dye liquid?
I left my heat on.
I also noticed some red still peeking around the edges. Not big deal it's still great.

I was at RS earlier, doing some web browsing as usual, and they noticed it right away (:

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

Personal Opinions:

Various cleaning products may fade or leach the dye. I have mine black dyed and sweaty hands, oil, surface contact, etc has yet to fade or leach the color... but then I always pamper my device too.

However...

Alcohol, peroxide, acetone, industrial cleaners and citrus agents may leach the color. But this would be expected to happen since this is an unprotected modification and many cleaning agents are aggressive in their design to breakup & dissolve pigments, dyes, inks, etc. Darker colors will last longer and increased submerged soak time of your cover will ensure deeper dye penetration.

I personally heated my dye before submerging close to boiling then reduces heat to medium. My cover soaked in a complete box of dye. Some colors like red, orange, green, etc may need two boxes of concentrated dye. Since this mod is relatively inexpensive, an additional box may not hurt.

Just an idea...

As a sealer you could try Future Floor polish. Its a VERY tough acrylic (water based) clear finish that has fast drying, non-yellowing and long lasting luster. Simply dillute with dissted water for a milky consistency and spary/airbrush on if you have proper tools. <---- (sealer I used in my 1/48 scale airplane modelling days)

Remember that over time the surface of the battery cover will naturally degrade purely from daily used and once the rubbereized coating is gone, simply using 1000 grit sandpaper to gently rough the surface will give new dye something to grip...

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

I dyed mine two days ago and had no leaching effect at all. I am a very heavy user so I would say I was pleased with the result. I have just finished installing a full Ghost Armor and it looks amazing. Much better fit and finish than my Invisible Shield on my Touch and Instinct.

I did mine on Wednesday, with 2 boxes actually (dark blue) and i did it properly. it came out perfectly and i made sure to buff it. over the next 2 days i wipe it clean it with water...no fading or rubbing. This morning though, i tried disinfecting wipes on it and the color started to rub off. Not alot, but consistant. if i did it long enough im sure it would all come out. i would take pics but dont have a cam on me.
I wonder if you had the water hot enough, since you and only a few others are reporting a problem? Heat is very important for the dye to work, and I can imagine in a want to be careful, not letting the water get hot enough to work...

Just my three cents. This is a great thread!

OHHH CAAAANADAAAAA!!

So I couldn't help myself. Got some All Weather Tape while I was at Wal-Mart picking up the dye. This is my first attempt at the Canadian maple leaf, perhaps if I had some patience and more attention to detail this would have came out well enough to keep. But perhaps someone else may make this work perfectly for them!

Yeah, I believe so. It was just an old skillet my mom was planning on throwing out.

My guess would be issues regarding insurance claims or instore swap, unless reported lost?

Re: A $1.48 goes a long way... Black Battery Cover!

That's strange, I've watched hour-long videos on my phone without seeing any bleeding. I didn't even "cook" mine during the dying process. Just brought water to a boil and soaked the cover in a styrofoam bowl. I didn't have any pots to throw out and I didn't want to take any chances with the dye.

I'm hoping that we're all not going to have dye all over our hands this summer.

Wow. Excellent attempt! This gives me ideas...

Lowes sells aluminum tape that has very good adhesion and since its aluminum, it will not shink. It also cuts/trims very nicely with an exacto knife. Maybe I could try a design with intricate details...
