I have noticed that some of the "upgraded" roms have camera version numbers in them. I'm not sure if that may help. We should look into these various version numbers. Problem is I do not know what the default is.
I'm racking my brains here, trying to think of a time where ANY manufacturer has ever updated their software, or done a hardware recal to fix terrible camera performance, and I can't think of one.

Pretty much, if your camera sucks for your liking, then you will have to find a different phone. For whatever reason, PDAphones in general just suck in this regard. The Touch was no exception.

I still have my eyes (wide open,) on the Xperia X1. It has drawbacks, (like the keyboard,) but all signs point to this unit being a lot better in nearly every category...

Re: Horrible Shutter lag

I guess it's all relative dissatisfaction. I mean, compared to my old Samsung A920, it makes the TP look like an expensive pro camera. And when I showed my iPhone-having friends some shots I took they were stunned by how good the pictures looked. And theirs doesn't even take video!

A camera in a phone is pretty much looked at like a standard feature nowadays, and we're spoiled.

Those of us who have had DECENT cameras in our phones, are definitely spoiled. I still await the day that my PDA phone does as good as a job as my M1.

Im waiting too! Like posted im a former m1 user and i spoiled the crap out of me... or did it?

I didnt ask htc to put a 3mp camera on this phone, and if i knew it wouldnt even perform like one i wouldve asked for a crappier lens to save me some money. The more i think about it, htc isnt a good company to do business with (from a consumer stand point). They knew these cameras dont perform well, yet they refuse to do anything about it.

Ive seen phones perform far worse than this, but that doesnt make it excusable or justified. The feeling i have is that the camera can perform much better than whats let on. Im not saying its going to turn into a cyber shot, but if we just found out how to change some of these camera settings manually we could access its true potential.

Case and point, on the touch, mogul, and kaiser, they didnt unlock higher res video recording... WHY? There is no good reason to lock the end user out of a feature thats other wise harmless in use. Yet, this is what i think is happening now. Theres no good explanation, just crappy software being thrown at us.

Re: Horrible Shutter lag

I also miss my A920 - it had a great camera in it! No phone I've had since has been as good. The TP camera is better (imho) than any HTC phone I've has, as well as my Q and 800w. I think smartphone always get the camera short stick. One thing to try is to take the pictures in better light when you can. I realize that this isn't always (or even often) possible, but the quality of all low-end cameras (which is all cell phone cameras to me) is greatly improved outdoors during the daytime, or even by putting your subject in a little better light. I've even noticed a modest improvement using the flash on the TP as a fill-in flash. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trading in my D80 anytime soon, but there is a certain convenience to the phone camera.

I've been wondering lately, what with good quality, small point-and-shoot cameras readily available from well-known camera manufacturers, why one of them hasn't teamed up with a phone company to make a phone that is really just a camera with some phone parts. Lots of new point-and-shoot cameras have touch screens now, so why not just partner up with a company who can put the phone parts together with it, and have a high-quality camera phone. Heck, they've got to do something new - most point-and-shoot lenses can't resolve much over 8MP, so making a 12+ MP point-and-shoot will mostly be a waste of time.

I am really surprised to hear you say this. I always thought the A920's camera was maddeningly slow (slower than the TPs once I made an adjustment or two listed above) and the quality of the shots was rank--so was the video. Then again, it was my first phone with camera and I didn't buy it primarily to take pictures, so I wasn't too worked up about it.

I guess this is the advantage for someone like me--I don't upgrade/switch my phones 5x a year like some other people so maybe I'm easier to impress. The A920 impressed me 2 years ago, then I needed an upgrade badly--and now the TP impresses me even more. I suppose in another year or two I'll feel like my phone is primitive again

Re: Horrible Shutter lag

I don't know about speed, but I do know that in bright light, it took great pictures for me, and it was a 1.3MP camera phone. Not bad for three years ago! I'll say that no camera I've had since has been "significantly" better. The TP takes really nice, 3MP blurry pictures

So you went from the A920 to the TP? Wow, I can't even remember how many phones I've had since then - six, maybe? Hmm, 6700, Q, Mogul, 800w, TP... More I'm sure. Dear Sprint - I want a Phone History tool!

Re: Horrible Shutter lag

I had an Instinct before this phone and it took awesome pics. The TP is crap. I played with it at a friends house the other day trying to take pics of the dogs and I did not get one good shot. I thought this cam would at least be as good as the instincts.

Re: Horrible Shutter lag

even my instinct had better camera it seems. You may say this has a flash, but dude, it's just an led light. I might as well use the led on my keys.

I laugh when people compare the touch pro to the iphone and say "TOUCH PRO CAN DO VIDEO" because it BARELY can do video...

There are a lot of things the Instinct does better--but you have to realize each phone reaches out to a different consumer base.

Instinct reaches out to people who want a phone that works right, but is less customizable.

Touch Pro reaches out to people who are willing to give a blind eye to poor build quality, poor camera performance, poor battery performance, poor touch screen response, heat/charging design flaws, slow GPS performance, and other laggy software issues---but at the same time, we have the freedom to do what we want, (as long as our batteries aren't empty.)

Sure would be nice to combine PocketPC Phone capability, with the build/design of a dumbphone. I would pay a grand for this white whale, and I would smile, even if I knew it only cost $500 to make. The iPhone is one of the closest to this goal--but it was ruined by millions of fanboys, and Apple, who cripples anything they touch.
