When I upgraded a new phone on one of my lines last month I grilled a guy in customer care about this very question and he assured me that you maintain the upgrade refund amount per line until you use it weather @ sprint or @ bb, NOW I know that's tier one support and to take it with a grain of salt but he sounded halfway intelligent and he was up on the postings from here and sprintusers, we talked about that for about ten minutes. I brought up sprintusers and he brought up ppc so who know's maybe he does know what he's talking about, take it for what it's worth.
The 20% is a best buy thing, you have to belong to their rewards program if i'm reading everything correct.

yes sir, i've been thru this same thing, and best buy was still able to find my rebate.

By "us," I'm assuming you mean Best Buy, so you're saying that Best Buy will be selling it cheaper than Sprint?

yes, on a plan $59.99 and above BBY is slated to launch the phone at under $299. That is not guarenteed at launch, but what we have tenatively laid out right now.

But that's not accounting for the Reward Zone 20% coupon on smartphones until 11/1/08, so for those that are reward zone members and are eligible for full upgrade (to get the phone at $299), you can also apply the 20% coupon and get it below $299...Here is the thread tpmwr was talking about:

Yes, I am not reffering to the 20% discount. That applies to all upgrades or new lines, I am refering soley to the before discount pricing. The phone will be $279.99 for new customer on rate plans above $59.99 BEFORE the 20% off
