Re: Best GPS Software for TP2
The lag we are talking about is from the actual GPS chip itself. It only updates its location every so many feet. Which is fine if you moving along at highway speeds, you wont notice it. BUT... take that same mapping application (no matter what it is) and try to use it while walking... you will immediately notice the GPS chip lag.
Theres TONS and TONS of threads regarding the chips inability to handle a high resolution (frequent position updates). Some guy even came up with a work around that extrapolated your position to help eliminate some of the lag. For those of you whom say there is no lag, do you only use your device when driving? what about walking? I have started a poll/thread to discuss this so we dont hijack the OP's thread check it here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=99268

I created a seperate thread for configuration http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=99273 since this is a topic about best nav software. But it is related of course. Walking may be another issue but I've seen too many threads about Car Navigation being unsiable. It's fine even at slow speeds. GeoCaching etc. may be different. GPS is only accurate to 10 meters. ~30 feet !! And that is serpate from map errors. Last edited by mswlogo; 11-29-2009 at 11:36 PM. |

Re: Best GPS Software for TP2
I think you missed my point. Have you tried using your software while walking? Thats when you will see the lag. IT has nothing to do with how the app connects to the GPS itself, its more of the resolution that the GPS chip itself has. I even mentioned I dont really see that much lag when I am driving at highway speeds, its when you get on foot and try to use the gps that you notice its low resolution.
The gps chip doesnt output position info at a high enough resolution to be used for walking, you only see your position update about every 30 - 50 feet. Honestly, if your using GPSgate with an app that can talk to the winmo gps API your just defeating the purpose of gpsgate. After some reading up on it, its simply an app that lets you share your gps with apps that doesnt use the winmo gps api. It "talks" to the gps chip through the windows "manage gps" api, or to a bluetooth receiver and simply echoes it on a "virtual" com port. So essentially your using an app that is not really needed. |

Re: Best GPS Software for TP2
Oops, sorry, my mistake. I rarely use GarminXT that I have loaded on my phone since I have a garmin Nuvi as well which does TTS and I confused the two.

Re: Best GPS Software for TP2
Yeah, I've got the el-cheapo Nuvi 255w (picked it up for $119) and it does TTS, but Mobile XT doesnt. Kinda odd, since they both use the same City Navigator mapset. Would be nice if Garmin would add TTS in as an update for Mobile XT. It would be top on my navi software list if they would.

Re: Best GPS Software for TP2
The input for GPSGate should be the same on what you see on your Google Map. Google Map should use your default Window port. Do not use it on GPSGate.
Your virtual port of GPSGate is what your app like TT7, iGo8 and Garmin XT should use. My virtual port is 4 and so that is what I use on my GPS software. The weird thing is that it doesnt up after you minized it. There is an error on the GPSGate apps but it is really running in the background. The minized work on my Treo Pro, but not the TP2. |

Re: Best GPS Software for TP2
Chong67,
You shouldnt need to use GPSGate for Gamrin Mobile XT, and I dont think you need it for iGo8 either. I am 100% sure you dont need it for Mobile XT as I use mobile XT on my TP2 everyday, and I dont have to use GPSgate. Just set mobile xt to use the "intermediate driver"...it should be fine. |

Re: Best GPS Software for TP2
I use GarminXT quite a bit also & it has no need for GPSgate.
GarminXT does lag slightly behind my built in the dash Garmin unit (every phone GPS I've ever tried did that, anybody claiming their's doesn't is FOS) but the lag isn't enough to worry about (you would not really notice it if the "real GPS" wasn't running right next to it) ~John |
