if u take out the verizon global support part everything else will work for a sprint device!!! but i think u may need to also flash a patched radio to get us gsm bands to work for sprint!!!

Re: how to offically unlock verizon tp2 sim for gsm use

Ok, I've read this whole thing and I can't understand why you would do this unless you are going out of the country. If you have a verizon phone, pay for verizon service because of a contract, why the hell would you get a sim card to use the other carriers towers?? Arent you then just paying more, $xx.xx for the verizon service, plus $xx.xx for the prepaid sim??? Someone please explain the advantage of this to me, cause maybe I'm dumb, but I dont get it.

Secondly, if you do use the phone overseas, with a prepaid sim card, how does the phone update stuff like weather, and email? Or does it just not do this when you use the prepaid card?

Thanks for any info

There are a number of very good reasons to do this, but you are right, obviously two services as a rule cost more. I say, "as a rule", because the first reason one might wish to make use of two sims is the overseas trip. A lot of times it is cheaper to buy a local sim than pay exorbitant roaming with your home carrier. And yes, if one wishes, one can find a plan with web access and everything else the home carrier has.

Another good reason to do this is for backup. If one winds up at a deserted train station at the wrong end of town or with a flat tire somewhere in the boondox where there's no service, that could make for a rather bad day. Having a backup doubles your chances of finding service and also increases the chance of not being forced to pay roaming.

A third reason to do this is the peace of mind one has from not being at the mercy of his or her carrier. If the carrier decides to play god with their plan, the victim of that doesn't have to play ball.

And then there's having a lump of humanity you talk to that eats up your minutes, but you were smart and for substantially less than adding minutes to your plan or paying overage, you got a secondary carrier with free unlimited to the carrier your lump of people just happens to use.

And there's the big reason almost everyone in this thread (despite any other reason) did this and that's simply because we're all hopeless geeks. And proud of it, my friend. Some people like to scuba dive and find lost coins; we like to push our phones to the max and find hidden functionality treasures.

Anyway, the reasons are endless, but most of them do not include ditching our carriers, although it does give us a bit more freedom if our carriers suddenly do something irreconcilably outrageous.

Thanks for that, and yeah, the geek part, I agree with you, I'm the same way. I actually read this out to my wife, and she started laughing at that point.

i have my tp2 sim unlocked for two reasons the first and most important is that i got tired of using one of my old phones as my throw away number! i have a girl that i have been with for like a year, and yes i cheat from time to time and to keep her from ever finding out i use my gsm line for everyone that i dont care to here from until im trying to meet up! also by doing this she doesnt here my txts or voice calls and cant see them at all! the only time i use it is when im not with her! she never ask questions about when my cdma side is off because once im inside my building and most of the offices my customers from work, there is no service!(seifs) and im on call so she doesnt always know when im at work!! plus those people that only have my gsm number really only have my google voice number!! also i dont have to physically have three phones, my personal and my work device is enoght!! having the tp2 just killed my need to have a second personal device!!

mods sorry if this is fround apon but i was being %100 honest with the guy!!

LOL! It's so true. It's the coolest things to tweak with these things. I've worked in IT for quite some time, but have never had as much fun with my servers, desktops, and laptops. Of course, it was tougher to take one everywhere I went, too.

I wonder how many folks in this forum also used to take stuff apart as kids. I know I did. Always had those three extra screws when I was done putting everything back together, though.

True, but I'm sorta glad the wife found out, especially because of the kiddos. I dunno, my philosophy is to catch one fish at a time.
