You are bashing WP7, and that is your right to voice your opinion, but I don't understand why. I can understand if you don't like the UI but what can't WP7 do that WM6.x do? The truth is, we don't have any details to call it a dumbphone.
It has to do with the interaction of the OS and the software on it. From what they showed and how they said that oems wont be able to customize the UI points toward dumb phone. Not to mention it sounded like they are gonna take the "app store" approach. Not to mention they clearly said its not a pocket pc...so if its not a pocket pc its a dumbphone..don't take "dumbphone" as a bashing..its just a slang term to refer to a phone thats not a "smartphone"

---------------------------------------------------------------

Reason they probably called it 7 rather then giving it a new name is probably to trick people into thinking its a new version that 7 and not a new OS altogether..like a lot of criticism for WebOS was that while many liked it, many felt uncertain because it had no version behind it. By claiming its 7.0 your showing "development".. some companies do same thing and skip version 1.0 and release 2.0 just not to show that the software is in its infancy.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Also you don't want windows XP on your phone, as XP is not made for such small screens making some things untouchable.

So is Blackberry a dumbphone because they dont allow UI customizations as well? Some people criticize phones by saying it is a dumbphone. That is why I thought you were bashing it.

I'm not trying to argue but the things they showed us of WP7 was basically a skim through. We have not even seen the phone aspects of it yet lol. Who is to say that we will not be able to unlock it and load apps on to the storage card?

I think the main reason we customized WM was because it had flaws. The average consumer has no idea how to do this. Microsoft saw this and wanted to appeal to the market share. When you really think about it, how much can you really customize in Android? There is not that much. People just want phones that work and work well out of the box.

I'm just trying to see your point. Instead of labeling OS as smartphones and dumbphones, why don't we just compare the features?
It seems like WM 6.x and WP7 will have very similar features. Internet seems to be better on 7.
Office suite is on both.
E-mail seems similar. From the sound of it, maybe easier to use on 7.

I think all we have seen is the UI and not the inner workings of WP7. So its too early to tell.

I'm still confused as to what you consider to be a smartphone OS. What about WM makes it one to you? Is it the only one out there in your eyes?

Windows mobile is not the only smartphone OS. What makes windows mobile stand out from the other Smartphone OS is its customization and long history including old app compatibility. Not to mention actual availability.

So in my case I'm probably gonna move to Android in 2010 and see how things go there after I do more research whether or not some vital applications are available or not (my guess they are)..and yes I consider Android a smartphone OS. Don't get me wrong, I will probably visit a store and give WP7 a shot..but so far I am clearly unimpressed and disappointed with microsoft.

Lately the boundary between a smartphone and a dumbphone have been blurred out a lot so it is hard to explain..before it used to be dumbphone, smartphone, pocketpc.

So a dumbphone would be all the cheap crappy phones, a smartphone would have a keyboard and stuff but no touch screen while a pocket pc would have a touch screen. After iPhone came out that changed and pocketpc was eliminate and only smartphone and dumbphone remained as a term while pocketpc merged in.

So when I say smartphone I am probably more going toward Pocket pc OS rather then true definition of smartphone.

For a comparison lets take the Instinct OS..what can WM7 do that Instinct cant?

As for customizations..people do this to make them more personal and fit their environment rather then a company telling you how it should look.

As stated before I have nothing against microsofts new OS..my problem is they put it as version 7 cutting off the original line. While microsoft may still develop it as windows embed it will most likely not show up in a phone.

umm, do you really want me to answer that? lol, I would be writing a book and all I have seen is an hour long demo of WP7.

I believe that dumb phone are restrictive. You can not mess with the operating system. In windows mobile 6.5 the user can access the windows operating system. I can drag and drop cabs and music from my pc to the folder I want on my windows phone. A dumb phone is a phone in which the user can't access the operating system. You can not access the os in an iphone or a blackberry. I heard that you won't be able to install applications on your sd card in windows mobile 7 for example.

then don't upgrade. they're going to have 6.x devices at the same time. you can continue to run your outdated apps into the ground. If what you're upset about is apps, then you should be happy because we're finally going to get some awesome ones. All the current good apps will likely be refreshed or ported over anyway.

I think the ui is unfinished. Everything will likely be spruced up. If you look at the zune hd ui and compare it to wp7, you can clearly see how unfinished wp7 really is... they just needed something to show or they would've been hammered by everyone. There's obviously a lot that wasn't mentioned or explained. There's going to be voice search, but they didn't show that off because it's not done. Did you see the dialer? it's very plain looking and obviously not done, which has to be why they didn't bother showing it. The xbox live hub was static too. One of the reps mentioned that when it's done it will be fully animated, almost like the xbox live experience. They had undeveloped placeholders throughout, so expect to see something different at the end of the year.

You can access system files in iPhones. It's called SSH.
