Re: Is Windows Mobile Vanishing?

Speaking of Apple, tomorrow is Wednesday, and something is supposed to happen. Is it the tablet release, or the iphone exclusivity over with? Seems to be the tablet from what I read, but we will see. Anxious to see what it's all about regardless.

Anyway, I do think that WM 7 will be the ultimate test whether or not WM stays around. (unless they have something else in the works) If that fails, then it's over. I do however wonder how the whole carrier and phone company thing works as far as what OS they want on their phones? I don't know if they have contracts or what, but I could see companies telling Microsoft that they just aren't up to par, and that none of their handsets will use WM anymore.

Again, I dont know how they come to this conclusion. If phone companies are seeing the numbers posted about Android and how it will eventually be number one, I can't see them wanting to go with much more.

Times are tough, and companies are going to do whatever it takes to sell their darn phones. Even if it means a mid level phone, but still with android.

Oh another note, the Palm Pre and Pixi for Verizon were both on dummy display today. Not only that, the Blackberry 8530 for Verizon was FREE on the tag.

I kind of wanted to play with the Pre on Verizon. I've messed with the real unit for Sprint at the store, but was hoping we'd have the Verizon one to play with to compare.

Just read this...

About 70% of Fortune 100 companies are actively piloting or deploying iPhones

http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Abou...le-a_9151.html

Never realized that. For some reason, I didn't think it was that big of a phone for the business end. I always thought WM and Blackberry phones were used more. Now it does say Apple has some way to go to catch RIM, but with their presence and what not, I can see it happening where they catch up. Guess you learn and read something new all of the time.

I'm not "still" with Sprint. I'm "back" with Sprint after leaving AT&T when they started forcing a PDA data plan on devices you paid full retail for.

This price is obviously not "significantly cheaper than Windows Mobilie phones" were at the time...
Everybody keeps saying "the iphone was $399 after the price drop." Please read the links I posted to get the REAL price. There were 2 models of iPhones- an 8GB and a 4GB. The 8GB was $399, but the 4GB was only $299, and they were selling refurbs for $99.

So compare that $299 price (we won't even touch the $99 refurb price) to the $450 a PPC-6700 cost at the time (on a new contract, $630 full retail). Yeah, it was only the 4GB model. But that was still 4GB more than the PPC-6700 had. And if I recall correctly, the biggest Mini SD you could get for the the PPC-6700 at the time was only 2GB anyway.

And yes, that is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper. $150 cheaper, and then it had a cheaper monthly plan on top of that ($20 data with 200 text messages included for the iPhone, compared to $25 data with another $5 to $10 for text messages on the PPC-6700 depending on the text message plan you picked).

It's already been confirmed that they will be announcing a tablet that runs on the iPhone OS. See the video of some CEO from another company confirming it here:

Not that I really care about an Apple Tablet that runs on the iPhone OS, but I just happened to see that earlier.

Re: Is Windows Mobile Vanishing?

I'll add my 2 cents in on this. Speaking as someone who's not a hard core techie but likes to play. I was actually just talking to some friends who are common users like myself about this very subject yesterday.

The problem with WinMob is that they don't get any of the good hype that Apple and Google get with their OS's. With both of those groups, they have their software store and people developing cheap easy to use programs. I know quite a few people who use both iPhones and Android devices and they are loving those little $1 or less widgets that can do anything and everything, whether they actually intend on really using them or not. They have that neat and cool effect. It's all a hype thing. And it's all good.

Likes been mentioned before, Windows and M$ are looked at as the Bog Bad. The Evil Empire. They get blamed for everything that happens to these devices running their software. Alot of that blame should actually go to the Phone company. Also, Windows Mobile is on a slow update path. It's an established OS whereas Apple and Google are just getting out there and it seems there's a new update every few weeks. After they get out there more and get caught up, I believe their updates will become fewer and less frequent.

I have stayed with WinMo as I've had PDAs since Windows 2002 when I got my 1st HP 2215 and used it at work. I have a few medical and pharmaceutical programs that I sometimes rely on for work. Most of my PDA use is still for play and keeping track of a busy family life. THe point is that I have stayed PC bound only because the programs I use are all WinMo/PC based. Only 1 of my medical programs have an iPhone companion.

I have compared with friends their Androids and my WinMo 6.1 TP2 and it is significantly faster. We did side by sides using internet browsers to look up the same websites and the Android got there first every time. I used Opera, PIE and Skyfire and every time, Android just worked faster.

Also, why is my TP2 running a chip that is slower and less powerful than my PDA that I have used for the last 5 years? I had put off switching over for years simply because there just is not 1 converged device out there that comes close to my Aximx51v. My Axim, built in November 2004, uses a Intel PXA270 running at 624Mhz whereas my TP2 built in December 2009 uses an ARN based Qualcomm 7600 running at 528Mhz. 6 Years later and I'm actually using a slower chip based PDA. There's no reason why it shouldn't be running at least 1Ghz by now. Also, my Axim had it's own dedicated video that allowed it to run faster.

I'm not a basher but the lack of hardware for Windows based phones is slowing it down and making it look bad on top of the impression that Windows is "So Last Century".......

That will be the downfall of Windows based SmartPhones as I see it.

But then again, I could be wrong......

So what is the general consensus on todays news, are you guys happy or sad? is this good for windows or are you guys going with android because you're upset, i'm just wondering, not trying to fight. I want to see if the ppcgeek community will stick with winmo or go droid.

At this point it will more than likely drive me to Google's platform. Sounds like they are going for the "closed" Apple model.

This "App Store" thing has taken off and it seems like Microsoft is jumping on the bandwagon for another revenue stream.

Who can blame them, it just sucks for us.

I'm still not really clear on what was announced today. I know they demonstrated the new interface, but I haven't had confirmation on the multitasking, installing apps that you didn't get from the app store, 3rd party interfaces like SPB Mobile Shell, backwards compatibility with Win Mo 6.5, etc.

I'll tell you this though- if I can't multi task, I'll be moving on. And if I can only install apps directly from the marketplace, I'll be moving on. And if I am forced to learn a new interface and buy all new apps anyway (basically starting over) then I will probably be moving on.

Especially now that SPB announced an Android version of Mobile Shell today. I will start over with all new apps, but keep the interface I am used to.

according to pocketnow.com and mobile tech world.com (who i've been following on twitter because they are at the conference) you will not be able to run any custom ui and your old apps will not work currently (but someone could always create an emulator) They haven't been able to clear up running 3rd party apps from elsewhere but its not looking good. windows has said this is a fresh start, you will be forced to learn a new interface and you will need new apps.
