I knew the 1st iphones were more expensive. I remember when everyone started complaining about the price drop and how the new iphone was going to be cheaper then the previous one. Like i was saying apple was able to drop their price because of how many units they are able to sell. In the beginning iphone was over $300 with a new contract, now you can get them for 199 with contract. i know they have 2 different versions now but there was a huge price drop on the iphone.

Again- when that iPhone was $200 with a new contract, the cheapest Windows Mobile phone was the PPC-6700 which was almost $500 on a new contract (and $630 full retail, if I remember correctly).

And, again, the data package for Windows Mobile phones was something like $30 on Sprint, and $45 on Verizon and AT&T. But the iPhone data plan was only $20 and included text messaging too.

Apple selling phones had nothing to do with the lower price. They were making money form iTunes and the app store, and then raised the price of the iPhone data package. That's why they lowered the price.

Yes, I remember this. It was only 2 months after the original release. And the 4GB was lowered to $299, with refurbs being sold for $99.

Apple also gave a $100 credit to everyone who paid the old price:
http://business.timesonline.co.uk/to...cle2398965.ece

So they didn't exactly pay that full original price. It's more like a delayed rebate (2 months is about what Sprint takes anyway to send a rebate).

So they totally undercut the PPC-6700, which at the time was selling for $450 with a new contract, $629 full retail:
http://www.mobiletechreview.com/Sprint-PPC-6700.htm

And Sprint required a data plan of $25, and text messaging cost even more on top of that. And this is Sprint we're talking about, Verizon was even more ($45 for data at the time with text messaging costing even more).

So that is exactly what I am saying here- the iPhone came in with commercials every 10 minutes, significantly cheaper than Windows Mobile phones, and cheaper plans.

Re: Is Windows Mobile Vanishing?

I think WM7 is coming out at a perfect time. If they release a WM7 phone and give it the works, I mean specs like the HD2 on a newly released phone with newly released WM7. That is how you build hype. Now if they do that WM7 would have to live up to the hype, just be an amazing OS.

If they fail WM7 we can kiss WM goodbye. None is going to want to put a failed os on a good phone.

the xv6700 was 399 with a new contract...and the second pocket pc on verizon's lineup at the time (samsung i730) was 199 with a 49.99 discount online =) and both of those were prices by at most spring 2006 (I was watching the phones salivating over them then). The xv6700 remained that price till about fall or winter 2007/2008 and the only reason the price decreased was because of the xv6800 if I do recall.

also the data package on vzw started at 30 bucks and for exchange services 45 bucks at the time the iphone was released...so on new plans not all ppcs and plans were as expensive as they were in like 2005

proof of xv6700 pricing is right here

Your numbers aren't all that different form mine. Yours show it was $400 on Verizon with a new 2 year contract, and the link I posted shows it was $450 on Sprint after a new 2 year. Either way, that iPhone came in at a significantly lower price ($299 for the 4 gig and a $20 data plan that included text messaging- and refurb 4 gigs for $99).

Re: Is Windows Mobile Vanishing?

not initially as was said the iphone was a 600 dollar phone it was only in the fall that the iphone price was reduced
also data plan is quite debatable and we would be merely mimicking the ATT v VZW commercials =/

9 dollar difference between unlimited att and unlimited vzw...for bigger network bla bla bla and that still was the case even in 07...

The 8 GB was $600. The 4GB was not. And they lowered the price 2 months after release, and gave everyone who had already purchased one $100 ($200 if purchased in the last 2 weeks before the price drop).

The data plan is not debatable at all, lol. The iPhone data was $20 for unlimited data with 200 text messages. At the time that was released I was paying $25 for data on Sprint and another $10 for text messaging.
And this was before Verizon purchased Alltel, by the way, so Verizon did not have the biggest data network back then. They were just barely starting to roll out EVDO.

Link to original iPhone data plan pricing- you can see in the comments that it also included 200 text messages:

Any questions?

The iPhone advertising was huge in its success. Look what happened with the droid, that phone sold like crazy and its arguably not the best android phone out. Everything else in your statement I disagree with. AT&T's plans were not and still are not cheaper than Sprints and the iPhone dropped to $399 WITH a contract within a few months of initial release. This price is obviously not "significantly cheaper than Windows Mobilie phones" were at the time...
