That's not Sprint. Thats Clearwire. When Clearwire began building it's Wimax network, LTE was a unicorn. It was a non-approved standard that wasn't commercially viable. WiMax was. WiMax had other actual deployments too.

The fact that Clearwire can switch, and has network flexibility, means they have positioned themselves well.

Sprint's investment in WiMax actually has less to do with a desire to roll out a 4g network than a desire to not lose valuable Spectrum. Sprint had a bunch of unused Spectrum that the FCC said they would take away from Sprint if they didn't use it. Sprint decided to utilize it with the deployment of a commercially ready 4G technology.

i think you guys are losing the technology battle with sporklover. his statements are factual and honestly starting wimax now and keeping up with tmobiles supposed switch to 10mg download hypothetically and then switching to lte without that much hassel (will probably just require purchasing new devices) does seem like a good way to go, I definitely won't mind the speed increase while they take another year or 2 to roll out lte.

You're crazy. The comments that rorytmeadows posted from the very link that sporklover posted pretty much summed it up. Nobody with any knowledge on this believes that nonsense about them being the only carrier in the world who can change with a software upgrade overnight. LOL, ridiculous.

I'm not the only one calling them a liar. In fact, I haven't seen one single person in the know who actually believes it. Did you read the comments inthe link rorytmeadows posted? Nobody buys that BS.

it's like saying they are the only network in the world who could change from CDMA to GSM with an overnight software upgrade. Utterly ridiculous.

I think someone got confused here. Obviously no one can prove that they are the ONLY one that can change tech, but I'm guessing they are saying that based on the fact that they are the ONLY one in the US with a 4G OFDM network. So, technically, they are the only ones that can change from one to the other RIGHT NOW.

There's no point in disputing whether or not they could flip the switch to change tech because LTE and Wimax are far more similar than some may realize. They are not nearly as different as CDMA and GSM.

Similar, yes. But they still require different hardware.

Uh, Wimax is also not an approved 4G standard either. And the fact remains that they are claiming to be the only ones in the world who can change between them without a change in hardware. You mean to tell me the first people who laid it out are the only ones who made such a flexible network? Nobody else in the world could look at what they did and emulate it?

LOL, laughable that anyone would believe that nonsense.
