I've tried this one and it changes the operator name until I soft reset, then it goes back to SprintPCS. I have tried waiting for a few minutes after making the reg change with the phone off and also tried it with it on, same result.
You cannot permanently change any value in "HKLM\System\State" These are all state based and are read from the phone on boot up. They are not permanent values. They are just used by apps to get the current "State" of the phone.

Can't this just be done by going into Settings > Buttons > Backlight
and clearing the checkbox "Enable keyboard backlight auto sensor"

I mean why play with the registry when you don't have to...

found something of interest though...

the registry entries for the built in java, it has some interesting entries, some of which i wonder if they disable the signed file checks

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\LOCKSTREAM

another interesting bit, i notice it has built in support for opera and internet explorer

how to get rid of some of thoes annoying sounds while on calls or making calls (or attempting), such as adjusting the volume,

go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds

Loudestincallvolume = the sound it makes when you turn the volume all the way up (that annoying little useless sound) delete this key to remove that

Quietestincallvolume = the same but for when you turn it all the way down

Networkdrop = the dropped call /w lost signal sound

Calldrop = caller hangs up before you do sound
