My experience

I've hard reset my phone before upgrading to the GPS-enabled one. It wasn't until after this update that I needed to call after a hard reset. Related in some way?

Anyway if you DO have to call: Remember to act dumb (unless you already are) and pretend like you have no idea what to do and what you did wrong. When they "inform you" about the akey act like they are saving your life and they are so smart and stuff.
Then when they ask if you are calling on the phone now, say yes (because you can't do the process while on the phone) and suggest they just EXPLAIN how to input the akey. Then say you will call them back if it doesn't work.
After all the buttering up, they will be happy to help so...
MAKE SURE YOU WRITE THAT AKEY NUMBER DOWN. (Not on the phone since after a hard reset it would be gone, you know?)

On my last 2 Hard Resets, all I had to do was do a *228

I didn't have to call.

It IS kinda crappy that we have to call now. That sux!
It's just another instance of "The Man" trying to keep us down...

Re: Verizon XV6800 Hard Reset - Account Investigations

Hi... which rom did you use? I have a new 6800 and HATE it with everything locked down by VZ. My 6700 was better. Bummer.

Thanks.
