Same here. I installed the ROM Thursday morning (rom and radio from HTC site w/no modifications) and overall the performance has been great. I let the customizations run, did not hard reset after ROM update (what's the point), and installed the programs I had before. Since then, I have used my phone in areas the 2.16 ROM locked me up and it just kept working! Memory and BT are much better in this ROM as well.

FYI for those who didnt notice....

PRL - 2.17 comes with PRL 60608 - Newest PRL is 60610

this will impact your ability to roam and receive signal from the right network at the right time.

SCI - Be sure to go into the NAM settings and look at your SCI, mine was set back to 2 and i immmediately noticed my phone didnt seem to register service correctly, calls took longer to ring through.

-------------------------

I fear we create a "performance mob mentality" when we claim issues are caused by one thing or another without much real isolated evidence supporting.

Show me exactly how you know the radio stack is the issue?
Show me exactly how you know the dropped call is a BT issue?

Dont get me wrong, i am not saying that percieved issues are not real, but that we are misdiagnosing them and leading people astray. Dont forget about the hardware too. As my good friend Kieth who worked on the linux kernal with Linus likes to say "design flaws cannot be patched with even excellent quality software/firmware".

for example: coverage issues - lets look at the networks, not the handsets.....

Radio waves (notice the word waves) ebb and flow like the ocean at the beach. This means that coverage is not static. You also have impact from weather. Bottom line, performance even in a "solid" coverage area will fluctuate (there are so many performance variables for the network, interferring cell signals, weather, topography, individual handsets etc). Having worked on the network engineering side i will tell you techs work very hard to maintain the percieved performance and coverage.

The signal strength meter is a dummy meter and is not 100% accurate dont attempt to use this as the sole indication of a performance change after a ROM update, especially if you have not updated your PRL.

------------------------

now i want to propose a solution to assist. Lets create a simple troubleshooting process for people to follow to help identify the true nature of the issues. I am sure HTC, Sprint, Alltel, Verizon and others would appreciate thought out constructive feedback more than a bunch of folks just screaming "it doesnt work!"

So when my 6800 comes next week, BNIB off ebay, you think I should load the new ROM right away? Or should I play for a few days, see if the radio works out before upgrading?

Damn Cano... that was well put and dead on. I stood up and applauded.

I was thinking the same thing you were, all the claimed problems in the world aren't going to do any good unless they are backed up with concise data and conditions, which obviously takes more effort than simply saying "it doesn't work!". The only way ROM 2.17 got done when is when a couple of users gathered up all the issues and spelled them out concisely and how to reproduce them under a given situation. They then posted this info on the Sprint forums where it was relayed back to Sprint product development.

I've not had any problems with the new ROM... until I started to load third party apps on it, so it's my responsibility to troubleshoot that. But for folks that are experiencing real issues with clean ROMs, you need to report it to Sprint directly so they can get working on it. Post your issue with the exact steps to reproduce it here:

If everyone does this then Sprint will just have more info to hopefully get one step closer to "getting it right" the next ROM.

It depends how new your "BNIB" phone is. I got mine new from sprint with the 2.08 ROM which wasn't too bad except for poor BT performance. I did not upgrade to the 2.09, but did upgrade to the 2.16. The bluetooth improved with this ROM, but there were other issues with the radio and memory. So far, with the 2.17 (two days into it), my performance is much, much better. I would suggest you try your new phone out for a while, probably before you load a bunch of customization, just to see how it works for you - then upgrade to the 2.17 if you want.

I will assume the PRL is packaged into the 'customizations'. I didn't run them and my PRL didn't change...

Hey, I'm still using the original ROM from when I bought the phone in June - I have NOT had any of the issues you all are getting. So, I am STILL waiting to upgrade. I don't see a reason to upgrade, yet????

The bottom line is that we are Americans and we are not use to Manufactures selling consumers BS products and then after they get the money, oh well we promise to fix it later. Thats complete BS. Then after they come forward with the promise fixit, they realize that they sliped into idiot mode again, and encouraged us to flash back to the old ROm. You do good/proactive liberals kill me. Sprint, HTC, Alltel, and all others should get it right before the product hits the Market period. It's my prediction that Sprint and HTC will trake a huge financial hit over their recent product flaws.
