Sometimes it will take longer than normal because the OTA Activation lags behind the ESN swap and commits the wrong programming information to the phone. This is definitely doable, just sometimes it takes a little longer.

If anyone ever does this, don't ever turn on the device until after the ESN swap is completed. That helps avoid the problem I just mentioned. If it still commits the wrong programming try a update profile and as last resort factory reset the phone.

It will work fine, you just have to let the network catch up to your device swaps sometimes.

Can you tell me more about getting the rebate after switching lines?? I somewhat simplified my situation in my original post. I don't actually have a line up for renewal. I created a new Sero line a few months ago, activating it with an old phone. Since then I've converted all my Sero lines into a family plan, but I still have the phone upgrade credit that came with that new line. So calling and driving around today, I realize now that I can't go through BB or RS to get my rebate taken care of automatically. And the Sprint store says I need to keep the phone on the one line for 30 days to get my rebate.

But darn it, I'm not letting my 11 year old kid have my new Evo for a month! (But I also want my rebate.) Sorry to pull this forum off topic. Here is some EVO talk. I played with one at Best Buy today, and it is a beautiful BEAUTIFUL device.

Re: Buying on one line, activating on another?

I did this with Radio Shack on the release day. I am on a Family shared account with my wife, though my Mom and Dad also have a Sprint account. Neither my wife or I were up for renewal, but my Father was. So, when I went into RS, they simply called Sprint, activated it on his account, deactivated it, activated it on my account, then reactivated his old phone. This was all done directly through Sprint with absolutely no hassle.

I actually did this with my wife when the Pre came out. She bought it on her new line, swapped it to mine as soon as we got home and I still got the rebate.

If you order it from Sprint online it arrives unactivated. I believe (could be wrong here) that you have to keep it on the line that it is activated on for 30 days. As soon as the phone is delivered just activate it on your line and mail off the mail in rebate.

If we are talking about the Sprint Mail-in Rebate send out the rebate form with a receipt attached like normal. If your rebate is declined you will receive a postcard explaining that your rebate was declined with a phone number that you can call. Call that number, follow the prompts to get to CS agent and explain what happened.

Technically speaking you have voided your MIR if you device swap before 30 days. Talking with an CS agent can help get your MIR approved. It is by no means a 100% guarantee but it is the best chance you will have at getting your MIR.

Re: Buying on one line, activating on another?

Best Buy did all of it for me. Went without a hitch.

Re: Buying on one line, activating on another?

I can confirm that BB handled this very situation for me this weekend. Activated on one of the 5 lines I have that was up for 2 year renewal. Activated then moved to my number (not up for renewal) all in about 20 minutes. Verified for me that the original phone on the upgrade line and my evo all rang to the correct numbers. Out the door for $250 after screen protector and case.
I was going to do all the swapping myself, but the lady was very nice (and easy on the eyes) and offered to do the work for me.....said she gets paid to help the customer, and I looked like a customer.
