when i bring up cmd and type adb shell i get adb is not recogonized as an internal or external command. how to fix this

Yes you still need to flash a custom ROM if you wish to do so. Nandroid backup is important because if something goes wrong you'd have a fallback ROM that you can reflash from recovery.

You can download the SDK or if you have the recovery-evo folder use adb-windows.exe

when i do that it runs a bunch of commands then closes. and when i am able to get into adb from using i get chmod is read only

What all commands? As soon as you get the command prompt and navigate to the folder where you dumped the files you should be able to type adb-windows shell It should leave you with a prompt (#)

Once there you should be able to start typing the commands from XDA

when i run these commands
cd c:\android-sdk-windows\tools
adb shell
i get the # but when i get to the chmod part it says is read only and cant

on the prompt type id It should output root (or gid=0). If not then there is your problem. Also, I assume you already did the first part of this rooting process, there is a procedure you must follow before doing anything on this thread.
