Re: Evo Tips, Tricks and anything I find useful. Will update. Updated 6/17/10

@Konfuzion
I think the Disable Boot sound may need another link. When partially rooted the steps from that xda link worked great, I did it a few times.
I've happily obtained full root and tonight flashed OMJ's latest. Those steps no longer worked for me. The OP date is 06-08-10 so this must've been a viable option all along.
What did work was this:
Use a different commandline and do: adb shell
Mount the system partition by doing: mount /system
Go into first folder: cd /system/media
rename the mp3 file: mv android_audio.mp3 android_audio.mp3.bak
Go into 2nd director: cd /system/customize/resource
Rename the mp3 file: mv SPC_animation_final.mp3 SPC_animation_final.mp3.bak
You're done! Reboot: reboot

Hope that helps.

The original source is here:
http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/...tup-sound.html

but I edited the steps to start from #4 since I didnt need to be in Recovery, just plugged the phone in (charge only works).
Maybe work that info into the link some way?

EDIT:If you try this and get a "failed on 'android_audio.mp3' -Read-only file system" then type exit to get out of adb shell. Then start over but use

adb remount

first. You should get a "remount succeeded" confirmation.
Now proceed with the steps from adb shell and you should be golden.

God! I understand that you dont understand much but Unrevoked AUTOMATICALLY runs at start-up and re-roots the phone EVERY reboot. But yes it isnt something you have to do manually.

your "how do you end/close an app" link took me to some windows mobile general discussion thread about free direct pushmail
this still happens. i know how .. just not why ..... i generally use my phone for the majority of my internet browsing & use the wiforum all the time while on this site but decided to see how the evo can handle the reg site & well the link works as u described . then 2 seconds later tried on wiforum n it took me to that windows page i mentioned.

Re: Evo Tips, Tricks and anything I find useful. Will update. Updated 6/20/10

Anyone having an issue with the phone not staying on when charging? I have mine set per the steps in the first post and unless I'm using a Nav app, the damn thing dims everytime when on my car charger.

I am rooted and have the latest radio if that makes any difference.

Ideas?

Re: Evo Tips, Tricks and anything I find useful. Will update. Updated 7/22/10

I didn't see any info in this FAQ on how to extract or backup apks you already have installed to your SD card. I'd recommend Astro File Manager for that (free in market). I also didn't see any info in this FAQ about sideloading apps without needing a root. Here are the steps I use:

How to sideload an apk:
Original link here, but I've provided my detailed noob friendly steps.
http://forum.androidcentral.com/show...589#post236589

1) Download and extract Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine: http://images.androidcentral.com/sit...C-SWM-v1.0.zip

2) On your phone, go to settings->applications->development and check the box that says USB debugging

3) Connect your phone to a PC and select "Charge only" on the phone. Let the drivers install on the PC.

4) Launch "AndroidCentral-SWM" (this is in the Sideload app folder you downloaded and extracted)

5) Click "Choose a File"

6) Browse for the "xx.apk" that you want to install and hit Open. Click OK on popup, hit Go and follow prompts.
