Re: Why do I feel like an idiot trying to hack my new EVO 4G?

Well you definitely didn't read all of them...

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/cdma-htc-e...hefs-only.html

for example..these things should be posted in general not upgrades.

Android is actually fairly simple to hack...its just a little tricky on the Evo because rooting depends on your hardware revision.

I would run update first. It will update your hboot to 2.10 (menu/settings/system update)
Double check your hboot.
install unrevoked driver manually (make sure its installed )
Back up RSA keys (I skipped this step,no issues with 4G )
Follow zikronix thread @ xda
[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 SOFF - Lets Get Small Edition - Upd. 12.30.10 - xda-developers

One thing I understood-hboot 2.02 is f..dup.Run OTA update to be on the safe side
This is the way I used today to root a friends EVO. It worked perfectly. Just follow the steps.

Re: Why do I feel like an idiot trying to hack my new EVO 4G?

The unrevoked beta came is out and the released version is pending. Easiest way to root the new hboots. Rooting gives you full access to your phone allowing you to run any program and load custom roms and themes. It also allows you to use free wifi tether apps and back up apps. You will want to root to make your phone work like it should not the way Sprint thought it should work.

Re: Why do I feel like an idiot trying to hack my new EVO 4G?

Theres no "hacking" in Android, its open source Once you get root enabled, you can pretty much do anything you want if you know *nix.
If you really want to learn how to work in the Android environment, its crazy easy since its perfectly legal, (another benefit of open source), and 95% of all standard *nix commands work in it.
Heres some good places to start:
Android Developers
Get the SDK and play away using the virtual development environment.
Theres also a metric crap ton of tutorials on the web for Linux.

Just update your evo with the latest ota update like someone recommended and either wait for the latest unrevoked to become official or use the beta version. I used the beta version of 3.22 couple months ago and it was my first time rooting coming from tp2 unlocked. Unrevoked is your best friend.

A lot of production apps require Root. Root lets you remove bloatware, add custom Roms and kernels. This allows you to extend battery life.

As a side effect, it also has the same effect as six months of Extendz.
