To find out what hardware version you have:
menu>settings>about phone>hardware information

more importantly you need to know:

What software version you have (Need to have software version 3.30):
menu>settings>about phone>software information

What HBOOT version you have (Need to have 2.02)
  1. power off your phone
  2. hold the volume down button and the power button until the phone comes on
You should see something like this:
SUPERSONIC EV2-3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-2.02.0000

Re: How do I root a Froyo 2.2 phone from Sprint?

I rooted my phone with no issue, but recently I rooted a friends phone with unrevoked. I noticed that there was an issue with the download links. Some of the download links will link you to an older version of unrevoked for the mac.

Make sure you check the version number of the one that you downloaded, and that you have the newest version of the reflash software. (It was sending me to 2.12 version, which would not work my friends Evo. When I found the correct link on their website, to v.3.2.1 I was able to do it with no issues.)

I just had to return my old EVO because it had a bad USB port.

The refurb I got had a bad speaker and no lights under the hardware buttons. So, they gave me a brand new unit today.

It had Froyo 2.2 on it already.

I went to the Root tutorial, which directed me to and xda thread [GUIDE] How to root Android 2.2 on the EVO 4G Outdated - xda-developersto root a 2.2 Sprint phone, but it doesn't work. That thread is outdated...but I tried it anyway.

Everything seems to go well until I get to the part where you have to use unrevoked 3. The phone says I have rolled back to 2.1 (eclair).

I get to the step using unrEVOked and it can't root...it's says it's missing the misc.

Is there a way to root this phone?

Thanks to all who reply.
i rooted my brother Evo last night using Unrevoked with no problems. He had his phone since Aug, so he has been installing all the OTA updates. But I didnt his phone in like 5mins.

Re: How do I root a Froyo 2.2 phone from Sprint?

Hmm...thanks for the help...
Perhaps my messages crossed with yours'.

I have 0003.
This link [TOOL][ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02 S-OFF - Updated - xda- says not to use it with a 0003 device. So I didn't.

I tried Unrevoked already...that was the first thing I tried. It doesn't get root.

The second thing I tried was [GUIDE] How to root Android 2.2 on the EVO 4G Outdated - xda-developers. As I mentioned above, it didn't either.

Anyway...

Software 1.47.651.1

HBOOT 2.02
Ship S-ON

Thanks again for all who reply.

Re: How do I root a Froyo 2.2 phone from Sprint?

I can't confidently tell you how to get back to froyo but if you can, here is the link that I used to root my Evo:

[ROOT] unrEVOked 3.21: one-click root for Froyo, no downgrading - xda-developers

My hardware version is 0003
Software number 3.29.651.5

It took me about 10 minutes to do it. I really haven't read alot about the different software versions, kernels, etc so just make sure you read everything if you decide to try it.

Sorry I think I missed that in your previous post. Double check that other thread on xda because it looks like some people are able to root with 003 using that method.

I have the EVO rooted and all is well. However, I forget how and when one can use a PC36IMG.zip to update versions rather than doing an all out wipe. The idea is to keep the current apps, settings, call logs, sms, mms, etc.

I currently have the 3.30.651.2 build but when i try to update from 3.29.651.2 via rom manager or reboot (renaming the PC36IMG.zip to update.zip) it does nothing. Yes, i did the update from sdcard option/method. I have done this before but now am not sure if i am repeating the process correctly.

Thanks in advance.
Why would you want to use a PC36img.zip to update? Just throw a rom on Root of your SD Card and boot into recovery. You can use an app like titanium backup to backup if you need to wipe. Also you'll need SMS Backup Restore to get your SMS messages.

Try this method. Should work, that other one you tried is "Outdated"
