Same thing for the TP2, as the batteries used are the same ones in the EVO.

I'm in for one and will report back with my results.
So the overload protection is in the battery, not between the usb port and the battery terminals? (thought that was why you needed to solder to the phone and not just insert the wires into the battery connection)
Also, anyone have the pin outs for the battery? I have a pixi back, a touchstone, an evo, and assorted wire and soldering iron in front of me (ok behind me since the kb is in front of me right now) and I am ready to go.

There may be another circuit protection on the phone, that I don't know, but I do know the battery has the circuit protection built into it.

Re: Make your evo compatible with TouchStone, for 10 bucks! (Includes TouchStone char

hey guys.. i also orderd a pixi back and touchstone (for $10) and was going to do the original mod shown in the first post but i thought after doing it i would still be able to use my usb to charge as well.. is that not the case??

If someone figues out the pin outs for the battery im wiling to risk the insurance cost to try this out..
I remeber that touchston charging was slower than direct usb charging so the option to quick charge with usb is critical IMO

Dont see where there would be any issue with using the USB charger, just NOT at the same time.
The Pre works just fine with a regular USB charger ...again while NOT on the touchstone.

DO NOT JUST CONNECT TO THE + and - OF THE BATTERY TERMINAL

Here is a Q&A for the mod where the originator of the mod expressly explains NOT to use the + and - terminals.

There wasn't a whole lot of trial and error. I just used a multimeter to find the proper contacts on the board. Despite what most people think, the contacts from the induction coil DO NOT go directly to the battery contacts. You could damage the battery and possibly the phone like that.
Here is a tutorial for the mod.

I gotta' ask, after all this modding, after all this voiding the warranty and possibly melting internal parts, is this REALLY worth it? You spend apparently $10 (however, you must also buy a touchstone base charging unit, how come THAT isn't part of the overall cost?) and you may have a charger that doesn't hold the phone in place.

Wouldn't it also help to put a magnet or something inside of the case and in the TouchStone charging base to hold the two in place?

Otherwise, seems a nice idea but not very useful in day-to-day.

I personally don't think it would be worth voiding the warranty. However, if I could figure out how to wire up the induction coil to a micro-USB connector, then I wouldn't void the warranty (since there would be no reason to open up the phone)...

As far as the cost... the $10 is for the both the Touchstone base and the battery cover which contains the coil (link in first post is to Verizon Wireless online store)

As for putting a magnet inside the case... that's precisely what the induction coil is - an electromagnet. There's also an electromagnetic coil in the base (that's the basis of inductive charging). So the act of charging should hold the phone on the base with a weak magnetic field.

Do the mod properly and there is no possibility of melting internal parts. You are just allowing an extension of the proper charging inlet so that it can be attached to an induction coil.

Complete knowledge of the workings of this mod is important before doing it. If you have complete knowledge of the science behind it, then you know there is very little chance (if you do it correctly) for you to damage your phone.

If you are silly and listen to the people who say "Hook up to the positive and negative terminals on the battery" You run a very good risk of melting internal parts. There are redundant fail safes for the battery. Bypassing those fail safes will result in you damaging your phone as well as yourself, and possibly your other belongings.

As far as this being "worth" it. thats a matter of opinion. Whats the point in the first place? Convenience? Its only moderately convenient. Its a gimmick. And now, its a fun mod. So if you want to learn to hardware mod, this is a good beginners mod.

As far as making an inductive micro USB charger, thats is totally pointless. You are then in essence just making a USB cable that can be broken away from itself. You are not making anything any more efficient. However, if you must make one, just connect the positive lead from the micro usb cable to the positive lead on the induction coil. Negative to negative and your done....very simple.

This is a fun mod to try, it voids your warranty, but so does rooting, and so does water. Pretty much anything you do to your phone voids warranty.

Keep in mind, this also disables your compass in the phone because of the magnets included in the induction coil.

Not to get too far off topic, but there's actually quite a bit of debate on whether rooting voids your warranty... it quite likely violates TOS, but I doubt it voids warranty. You're just modifying software, not hardware. It's like buying a computer with Windows 7 and installing Linux instead - it doesn't void the warranty on the hardware. They might refuse to support the software, but they're not going to deny service for hardware issues (I work in Tech support for a major computer manufacturer, so I speak from 1st hand knowledge).
