Re: Questions about the EVO 3D

I was reading about the evo 3d passing the FCC on a post at Engadget. Someone posted the following.
"Engadget missed the most important part.

The EVO 3D will support the SMR band!

817.0MHz - 822.75MHz

Hello Sprint coverage."

I have googled smr band and came up with pages and pages of info on it but I dont really understand what it means. Could someone put it in "Tech for dummies" language for me?

The "SMR" band is a lower frequency than CDMA it is what Nextel phones run on (Iden network). This phone is going to be some of many that will be able to run on all sides of Sprint's network (CDMA, IDEN, and WIMAX), Right now Sprint is working on upgrading all towers not only to handle WIMAX or 4G capabilities, but they are making them all software based so that they can run at all frequencies. Not only is this going to make costs of fixing towers cheaper, everyones coverage is going to be much more extensive. Although, this is a long term process, they are thinking about 3 years to get done, most of the newer devices are going to be rolling out with this type of triple chipset.

With this being an extra radio will it consumer more battery life? And when you say that everyone's coverage will ne better do you mean everyone or his people with phones that have smr band?

I don't know for sure on battery life but I'm thinking because after this is all rolled out there will be less roaming, it will save some battery life. On the hardware side I don't think it will use any more or less battery life but don't quote me on that. Also, since most people use their upgrades and they will have a newer phone with this chipset, I speak for everyone on the Sprint network when I sy their coverage with increase.

Will it just WORK on iden or will that radio have to be turned on and off like 4G?

Also I remember when push to talk was real popular they pretty much had coverage all over the USA. If it runs on that same network will we have the same coverage? Also can it do data too or just voice?

From what I was told, the phones will automatically work on whichever bandwith, but I'm not sure if it will be able to just work on the iden bandwith on its own. It's still really new and many of the details haven't came all the way down the line, I will see what I can find out for you tomorrow. Oh, and as for iden coverage, its definately not great. It's more spotty and cdma coverage is much more plentiful. Also, Sprint still has not gotten the technology to do data and voice together. And believe me you don't want to do data on iden

I found a little bit more information on this whole spectrum thing and from what I understand Sprint is going to kill its Nextel iden network and use that spectrum (the 800mhz one we are discussing here) and convert it to cdma. This is why the Sprint coverage will be better and only newer phones like the EVO3d and later new phones that have a radio that will be able to interact with that frequency will have better coverage.

Can anyone confirm this for me? Pinkbunniz? Gten? Anyone?

What I don't understand is why they would put it in the EVO3d when they claim they won't be doing the iden to cdma network switch until 2013 heck... By then we will all have the all new EVO 6D with hd this and that (pause for laughter) can anyone confirm this?

@jimmiekain I would think they will start now because not everyone is like us geeks and upgrade every year and 2 because then everyone should be ready when it starts rolling out kind of like 4g but who knows that's my logical opinion lol

I hope your right. I wanna finally be able to go places and not have to ask someone with Verizon if I can use their phone because I don't have service.
