Re: I really don't get what you guys are doing to your batteries.

anyone ever looked at the brightness of display? in all the conversations i've read about battery life i've never seen screen brightness come up. if mine is all the way up, then my phone doesn't make it through the day but when i turn it down to an acceptable level (i keep mine one notch above off) i can go a day and a half without a charge

I believe this is incorrect. Push does not sync the "whole mailbox" everytime you receive a msg. Its a one way "push".

Also, IMHO, your theory is flawed if you consider that, at night for example, most ppl do not receive alot, if any, email... so when you have it set to manually check every hour, then your device is checking every hour all thru the night, whereas with push mail your device could go all night without ever "checking in"....

Re: I really don't get what you guys are doing to your batteries.

it does sync the mailbox or else how else would it sync all of your mail folders (ex. sent, custom ones you make, deleted items, etc)?? Push with activesync is 2 way it compares changes on the server and syncs them to the phone and vice versa. Thats how it stays in sync. Move a mail item on OWA to a diff folder and itll happen on your phone and vice versa on the phone to OWA. u can uncheck the some of the folders (not inbox, drafts, sent) but most people leave them on to keep a full synced record and a mirror image

Im not talking about the night when its plugged in, thats why theres a sync schedule in activesync where you can set the times you for example are in the office (9-5) for immdeiately and after that every x hours.

This is in a merely a during the day preserving the battery sense, and the answer is it really depends on your usage.

Re: I really don't get what you guys are doing to your batteries.

My battery works pretty good (since the second week)... I did try the schedule check of email set at 30 mins and it drained quickly. I have the screen set to auto brightness, I read for hours with mobipocket and I was tethered for a good 1hr without over heating or using hardly any battery. I guess I am one of hte lucky ones and will count my blessings. I hope my b/fs Pro will be one of the good ones too.. or he'll kill me for making him switch.

It's my understanding that when using push mail ("As items arrive") the Exchange server creates an entry w/ the IP address of the device, then both sides (client and server) sit and wait until a new msg arrives. Exchange then pushes the msg to the client.

When a schedule is defined, lets say for 15 minutes, then every 15 mins your device is opening a data connection and checking to see if new mail has arrived. With this method, regardless if there is new mail or not, a data connection is opened every 15 mins.

With push mail, however, if you dont recieve mail for an hour or two, then your device never opens a data connection to check. It simply waits until the server notifies it.

There are of course other areas where "push mail" may open a connection, for example, when you update a contact that is saved in outlook, etc... however, my experience has been that push mail is a battery saver, not a pig.

But maybe I am missing the point here?
Yeah, I think you're missing it. You see the whole thing about "Push" is that mail is pushed from the server to the client. The data cannot be pushed if the client doesn't have a data connection. When you say, "It simply waits until the server notifies it," how do you think the server does that?

I typically get several hundred e-mails a day during the week. For me, there is no way I could do push without losing my battery half way through the workday.

Whether or not push mail is a batter saver really depends on the volume of e-mail or changes to contacts etc.

Like the OP though, I have no issue with battery life and I'm a fairly heavy user.

Re: I really don't get what you guys are doing to your batteries.

The mogul was terrible on battery life too, however a few roms later, the device lasts almost 2 days for me. I think it's a matter of time when people figure out a few tricks and when HTC will release a new ROM that will make the device better on the battery.

Plus isn't the XButton not set to close when hitting the X close button? I remember everytime I flashed my mogul, I had to set the XButton to close on X. Maybe people didn't set this yet and apps are runnign in the background...

Re: I really don't get what you guys are doing to your batteries.

I don't seem to have a big problem with my battery life either. It seems right on par with what the regular Touch was getting.

On the weekends, I charge the phone Friday night, and by Monday morning it's at maybe 10-15%. That's with PUSH email, and decent signal strength. (2-3 bars typically) Maybe 15-20 emails total throughout the weekend.

On the days I go to school (in the hills, and the classrooms are in concrete buildings...) I turn off the PUSH email as it'll constantly be trying to establish a data connection. Once I leave for the day I turn PUSH back on, and with that method I can easily get through the day with maybe 30% when I go to bed.

The days I go to work (not much anymore thankfully!) I also have to turn off PUSH, but I have literally no reception at work. If I don't turn off PUSH the battery is dead by noon (I start at 6:00AM typically). If I turn it off, and turn it back on when I leave, it is usually around 40% by the end of the day.

I typically get about 30 messages a day also.
