it does sync the mailbox or else how else would it sync all of your mail folders (ex. sent, custom ones you make, deleted items, etc)?? Push with activesync is 2 way it compares changes on the server and syncs them to the phone and vice versa. Thats how it stays in sync. Move a mail item on OWA to a diff folder and itll happen on your phone and vice versa on the phone to OWA. u can uncheck the some of the folders (not inbox, drafts, sent) but most people leave them on to keep a full synced record and a mirror image

Im not talking about the night when its plugged in, thats why theres a sync schedule in activesync where you can set the times you for example are in the office (9-5) for immdeiately and after that every x hours.

This is in a merely a during the day preserving the battery sense, and the answer is it really depends on your usage.
