Apple or another 3rd party partner probably knows to check for signal levels while holding the phone in your hand in multiple positions. This checklist has probably been handed down from the first gen iPhone or the first cell phone ever made for that matter.
They did test and it probably came out fine..remember Apple out of all the companies tries to hide their cellphones the most.. remember the Gizmodo incidence...one phone gets leaked a month or 2 in advanced and they go crazy...

Somethings show up in a checklist yes..but it doesn't tell you whether to keep the antenna inside or outside...old phones used to have antennas on outside...but they were on top...after the FCC made them put them on the bottom to most companies they saw best performance when it was inside...Apple wasn't there for that testing phase and thought they were being "innovative"..I remember before it came out them BRAGGING how they wrapped the antenna around that way to make it better...they clearly just didn't know what they were doing...it sounds good on paper but not practical..

What about SAR testing? In order to check how much RF radiation is going into your hand/head/waist you probably would test while holding the phone in all sorts of positions and have the phone produce varying degrees of signal power levels. I would think that every setting you can think of would be turned on during this test especially say signal db levels. The FCC probably even has a checklist of what cell phone makers need to do before submitting a phone to the FCC for approval. How did they not notice that if you touch the seam your signal drops by 20, 30 db's or more?
SAR testing is not done by a person putting the device to their head and testing..its done by a machine..if you look at the FCC documents they got an overview of how they do the testing..

Now again it sound to me like Apple chose to ignore some of these checklists, but they had to know, they just had to...
If anything its negligence on their part..simple as that...

I thought that when the phone was found in the bar someone on gizmodo speculated that the phone would have these very issues if that was the antenna on the outside of the phone. All I can find now easily was at least 2 weeks before release of the phone it was on the internet via http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/26/i...-by-danish-pr/ and all this by looking at the dissection pictures. You don't think Apple was trolling through all the forums after the gizmodo story leaked. I still think they knew even before this article but how much more do I have to show before we all agree that they knew before the release date?

I am not saying they did not know about it before the release date..but I am saying it is possible for them to not to have known about it till already after they manufactured them in bulk...at that point there is no turning back for a company....similar to what happened with Windows ME...M$ played dumb saying no there is no memory leak issue...even though you can tell there was cause after opening paint brush your pc would slow down to a crawl (They also forced manufacturers not to sell the older OS and ONLY have ME)...and after a long time they finally admitted to the bug..and they have a working fix..that fix being buying windows XP, as a fix for ME was impossible....

But to say Apple knew about this when they initial designed the product is a stretch...

I've never really like the iPhones much...

Ok, that's total bull$hit, if they were on Sprint or it didn't cost me my first born to switch to At&t, I would have gotten one when I had my TP2.

All phones have their weaknesses. Why isn't there a big hoopla about the Evo and it's grounding issues? I've talked to all my friends who have an iphone 4 and they haven't had any issues with it. And half of them want to switch to Android, so they wouldn't miss a chance to talk $hit on apple.

Have them look at the Samsung Galaxy S line ...its on all the carriers and its like an iphone but better and running android..

But yes the issue depends on the signal in your area...also it depends how you hold it..

I don't know, to me that's like being surprised to find out that a resister resists the flow of electrical current or a capacitor has the ability to store an electric charge. Apple didn't create anything new here other then stick smaller components into a smaller frame. These are the basic laws of electronics that all cell phones share, not software with programmable variables (at least the antenna portion of the circuit). The basics of the cell phone here stay unchanged. To the average person something like this could be missed but not 40+ PhD's specifically in this field with years of experience working for other companies and seeing how other companies test their phones. Did Apple pick 40+ people right out of school with no work experience? I'm sure some of these people worked for HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Sanyo etc...None of this people said, "Hey maybe we should hold the phone in our bare hands and check signal levels like we did at x company?".

I guess it's possible, but I see this as more unlikely then all these specialists overlooking it.

Then why not just encase the antenna in the first place? Where it belongs...

Personally, as pretty as the new iPhone is, I wouldnt want yo have it in a case. I never kept my 3G in a case either.

Agreed, but holding the phone where the antenna is under the case and blocking it might make up 10% of signal loss. Grounding/shorting out an antenna could kill your signal up to 100% but probably at least somewhere over 50% of signal loss. Whatever the actual number is it's not nearly as bad as every other phone currently out right now.

As far as other phone vendors people including myself are bashing the EVO right now and their lame ass 30 fps cap and input lag, and don't get me started on WP7, come out of the iPhone forums and witness this for yourself...

To be fair though Steve Jobs just asks for this abuse with his Holier then thou attitude and that he knows what's best for everybody, such as "don't hold the phone that way" as his answer for the antenna problem...

Re: any one watching the press conference? 7/16/2010

You guys also have to keep in mind that Government regulations state that the antenna has to be a certain distance from your grill on the phone because of RADIATION!!!!

Now as gTen notes, the Galaxy S series phones are a good example of doing this right, but it's something to keep in mind too.
