I had that issue too, it only works with a sim card in the phone. any sim card works if you want, even congo cellular or antarctic penguin pcs.

why don't those that want to get usb tethering or or wifi don't get a sim card on ebay or just go to your local wal mart and get one for a prepaid phone so that way you can get it to work and then when you are in an area that's GSM your phone will work also, it's like you knock out two issues with one sim card, or won't that fix the issue?

I'd venture to say that USB tethering is easier, it's arguably more convenient for the charging aspect of things, and of course it's definitely faster.

Probably, but my phone is also my primary internet connection shared between 2 laptops, so it's not very convenient for me.

yes, i guess i will just buck up and get a sim card to save on the headaches. for the time being I decided to flash a different rom.

YOu could tether with USB to one laptop, and then have that laptop share the connection with the other via a special usb cable, a crossover ethernet cable (much cheaper), or some program that lets the laptop be a wifi hub
