Re: Is there much point in Flashing the Touch Pro?
As far as I'm concerned, it's all a matter of mindset. If you can't be satisfied unless you've pushed the limits, then there's plenty of point in flashing a new ROM. If you can be satisfied with good enough and the TP fills the bill, then there isn't much point.
I happen to be someone who can define "good enough" and be happy with it. Consequently, I'm completely satisfied with my TP and all I've done is some key tweaks. 'Course my TP is a business tool and I don't even try to use it as an entertainment device, but that's another matter for another thread. Pete |

There is a thread somewhere here explaining the steps for the Touch Pro. Here is the post for the normal Touch, all the steps are almost the same http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=31437 I did this to both my phones and the GPS works awesome now. |

Go Juicy, hell, go custom in general and you'll never GO BACK. The stock TP was so bloated with programs that don't even get used. Just for comparison sakes, if you remember when you got your phone at the store, the initialization of the device (customizations and everything) took closer to 10 min. With Juicy's Rom (I can't speak to the others but might flash a couple just to mess around with them) after a hard reset, the phone load takes about about 2 minutes if that. To wrap this up, I too wondered why bother with a custom rom. I was quite hesitant but decided that if I didn't like it, if they didn't blow the stock rom out of the water, I'd just flash back. Let me say, NO FN WAY will I ever go back to that stock rom... UNLESS of course I turn my phone in for a warranty replacement.

Re: Is there much point in Flashing the Touch Pro?
Is it really that "blazingly fast"? Are there any numbers to back it up?
I'd be curious to see Real numbers for custom ROM vs a stock TP with just the TP essentials tweaks. I don't doubt the Custom ROMs maybe a bit faster but I don't think it is as blazing in real-life as most perceive it to be. And as far as bloat, the TP has plenty of memory (sans VZN) so it is not as big as an issue as with the Mogul. Unless of course you regularily open up the Windows folder with File Explorer. Re: Is there much point in Flashing the Touch Pro?
I don't have any numbers but in the end and as always, perception IS reality. I'm sure there are some numbers floating around out there for those that are in the market and concerned.
As far as bloat, I'd add "clutter" to that as well. Who really needs a bunch of programs that will never be used just hanging out? It's not really hurting performance as it might have with the 6700 (I don't beleive it was a real issue with the 6800) but it sure is nice to be rid of them. For anyone that is sceptical, it's very easy to unlock, flash and then see for yourself using the readily available resources here. If it's not all that anyone is saying or just doesn't live up to expectations, going back is just as easy. |

But I just don't think it is "drastically faster" as everyone claims. Yes it can clear away some unused programs. Yes, it can be perceptionally faster, but I still think that so far the ROM upgrades give you incremental improvements not the drastic improvements that everyone says it is. There really isn't that "killer app" that makes the ROM upgrades an ABSOLUTE must (like the GPS in the mogul). The FM radio would be cool but that's not quite there yet. But I do agree with the previous poster in that it's easy to flash. So if you are inclined flash away! Numbers would be nice... and could put an end to all debate. |

Re: Is there much point in Flashing the Touch Pro?
Kinda getting the feeling this thread is degenerating into "My ROM is best!"
"No, My ROM is best", "No this ROM is the best" It may be "free advertising" for your personal Custom ROM but it detracts from the original purpose of the thread. Maybe it should be closed down since it's getting away from the OP's original question. |
