Is there much point in Flashing the Touch Pro?

My girlfriend just got the Touch Pro, so I’ve been tweaking it out. I myself have had the HTC Touch (Vogue) for over a year and flashed it early on and have switch ROM's several times, mostly trying to get the GPS to work properly. But through all that i learnt what programs and tweaks I like, so now I don't load new ROM's in very often.

With my girlfriends Touch Pro, i can't find a good reason to flash it and load custom ROM's. With the touch there was good reason, to get the GPS unlocked, to get WM 6.1 and REVA. The Touch Pro already has all of these things. And the GPS hacks using QPST work without flashing the phone. I did the GPS tweaks today and now her GPS works perfectly.

So what are the reasons to flash the Touch Pro? The only one I can think of, is to get the new IE6 Mobile. But I use Opera Mobile anyways.

The removal of bloatware would be an obvious reason, along with upgrading the existing software versions. Improve speed and performance?

This is the Diamond forum though..

Yes it makes removing some bloat easier, but one can remove a lot without flashing and installing new ROMS. And one can do most tweaks as well, keeping full warrenty as well.

Diamon Forum? I am in the Touch Pro forum, at the top of this thread it says...
PPCGeeks > Pocket PC Phones > HTC Touch Pro > CDMA HTC Touch Pro Upgrades

If you need to use WMWifiRouter with a laptop or PC (or any other way of tethering) you may have to flash a custom rom. I was actually pretty happy with the stock Bell rom for speed and performance but could not for the life of me get WMWifiRouter to work. It would set up the wifi network and say connected to the phones data and my laptop would find the network it created and connect to it but would not get internet. I flashed a custom rom and it's worked perfect ever since then. I don't konw if Telus does the same thing to their tethering abilities or not though. If you don't need tethering and you are happy with the speed and performance I'd say you may as well leave it.

I know it's old but you know how the saying goes. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I have flashed my TP simply because I assumed it would be like flashing with the Mogul/Apache... With the TP it is a bit different. You'll see incremental improvements.

Yes you can get rid of some of the bloatware but... funny thing, some of the bloatware that Sprint included is actually somehwat useful and I ended up re-installing it anyways (Worldcard, TP3D, SprintTV). By FAR that biggest bloatware is TP3D but most custom ROMS still keep it.

As for speed, you might see some slight speed increases but once you start adding more stuff to your TP you probably won't see much of a difference.

Really about 95% of what you see in Custom ROMS can be done with Cab installations and Registry tweaks.

Now I'm not saying that Custom ROMS are bad. Quite the contrary, some of them are quite impressive. Just don't expect a whole new phone with New ROMs.

Re: Is there much point in Flashing the Touch Pro?

I've flashed my TP (lots) because I am a geek and like messing/tweaking via the registry. If all my preferred customizations are cooked in or UC'd I can always hard reset instead of spending hours getting back to square one.

More to your question: I flashed my son's TP because his line has no data plan and the stock rom kept driving him crazy with notifications. ](*,) I wasn't able to flush all the data related apps that were causing probs for him without cooking up a rom without them. He also complained that the TP seemed slow compared to his old phone. Subjectively, he finds the new rom much snappier and cleaner.
