According to Sprint *38 should disable call forwarding all together.

Nope.

If you have a wireless router you can use that to connect the device.
If the PC has a wireless adapter you can connect it to the device without wires.
That is what I do.

I have to use my phone as a modem, but Ive never experienced this issue before in more than 1 year and a half and countless flashes.
