"Thank you for your reply. I apologize for the miscommunication regarding the activation date of handset on your account. The HTC 7380 was activated on July 01, 2010 on your line XXXXXXXXX. As the TEP can be added within 30 days of handset activation so I have added the TEP on your account effective from July 4, 2010. Please let us know if there is anything else I can assist you with. Thank you for emailing us."

I would have just used a crap phone to switch it to, use it a couple days and switch it back to the one you bought online then add insurance if that didn't work.
 And one thing insurance is good for if your device is EOL or out of stock then they upgrade you for free. Happened to me with the Mogul to the Pro then the Pro to the Pro 2. To me its worth the extra cash to shell out instead of buying from ebay.
