I'm convinced this edit does nothing. I unplugged my phone at 10:45 this morning. I went to work which has terrible reception. At 2:45 I had sent 2 texts and checked the weather. No GPS, no games, no internet...my battery was down to 43%. 50+% loss in about 3 hrs!!! I sent a couple more texts on my way home....still no GPS, internet or games. Now I just got home (4:15) and the battery is at 25%.

Never had this problem until I made the edit. I'm going back to stock so my phone can make it through the day.

Sounds like it does something worse than nothing... just to clarify, is this worse than how your battery life was before the edit?

This is far worse. However, I can't say this is totally to blame from just one day of usage. I dunno if it has something to do with being in a poor reception area.

Although I can honestly say that my battery has never drained like this before. I have my reasons and this experience is enough for me to go back to stock.

Thanks. The reason I'm asking is that my experience with this change over the last few days has been mixed. If I don't use my device at all (it's Fall Break for our University), it will end the day with 80% charge after starting at 100%, so standby is draining 20% over the course of about 14 hours, which might actually be a little better than it was before I made the change.

On a couple of days when I used the device with this change, however, I noticed some strange behavior. Once, I was using the device for a phone call and before the phone call I was at 60%. I ended the call and turned the phone off. 1/2 hour later, the phone was indicating that the battery was completely discharged. I also noticed something similar on another day - was playing teeter for 15 minutes and phone was at 70% when I started. Finished, turned off the device, and the battery was dead an hour later.

Definitely did not notice this with a couple of weeks of using the device without this change. Will probably change it back tonight to confirm my observations.

I removed the edit (as well as a hard reset) and today was the same routine but different results. Phone left the charger at ~10:25 and I am now home at 4:41. I spent some time playing on the phone at work swappin' cabs with my buddy's GSM Diamond to see what I could get to work. So all in all I have a significant amount of more activity today than yesterday. Today, in roughly 6 hours and 20 minutes I am at 69%. A far better improvement from yesterday.

I read on smartphonejunkie.com (thread=http://www.smartphonejunkie.com/showthread.php?t=173865) that some people discovered they had the RSS Hub application turned on and was always downloading new feeds and messages when a EVDO network connection was available (which for most is going to be a good portion of the time.)

I know a coworker of mine bought one and just went into RSS Hub to see what it was. He has been complaining of fast battery drain ever since. So that may be one think folks want to check.

Also, if you are polling the battery less often, then it is like syncing your email every 2 hrs. You may have new mail, but you wont know until your email application polls the server in the next 2 hr interval. Which means the battery reg edit may only be superficial. Depending on how your usage staggers your battery polling, you could see some drastic drops in battery life.

The person who found the RSS thing said they watched for their data meter to just kick into gear, went to task/process manager, and found RSS HUb was running when they had not launched it in days. They turned the auto updates off and seemed to improve battery and stop the randong data polling.

Hmm, this is an interesting theory.

Juicy47 - I wonder if you could tell us exactly what this change to PollInterval does? Does it just change how frequently the battery status indicator is updated or is there more to it?

not to my knowledge

to those complaining about bad battery life in poor coverage areas.... it is because of the poor coverage area.

the edit is not a "fix-all", but many people have confirmed a much better battery life.

i never started rss hub and it never syncs data. I will likely remove it in 2.6+ of my ROMs
