Wingzero: Yeah, at 520mhz the device actually feels like it really should. There are no delays when opening or closing things, alarms/notifications just pop up instantly. It feels nice at that speed.

Wideawake: Althought I don't recall anyone doing the exact same test as the one for PHM (pocket hack master), most users report the same behavior. Basically, untill we're able to disable the autoscaling of the processor and let these OC programs take over, it's always more power consumption.

cac9478 From what I recall in that power consumption thread, there's really no point in using auto-scaling with these OC programs. In other words, running it at 416mhz with XCPUScalar still uses twice as much power as not running XCPUScalar at all.

So if you're going to bother running the program, might as well just rev it up to 520mhz and get the added speed. Doing otherwise doesn't gain you anything.

Having said that, I do like the snappiness of 520 and I'll play with it for a couple of days but I doubt I'll keep it on all the time. I do notice it is noticably warmer by the battery area.

If people are really interested in OC'ing their device, I recommend helping the cause and buzz over to Anton Tomov's place to beta test PHM 2006/WM5 (he could use some 6700 users). This new version is supposed to help out with the power drainage issue but he probably needs our feedback. Here's his place:

So I tested it over the last two days. And I can confirm it really kills battery life. I love the speed of it when running at 520mhz as stated by malatesta. I ran the auto scale set at 208 0-15%, 416mhz 16-40%, and 520mhz for everything above. Granted I didnt run any exact tests, just running it. I actually ran it as hard as I could. I noticed when set to 624mhz the device freezes up and has to be reset to solve this probelm. So if you use it dont set it to 624! Also the battery area did get heated when testing it also. A couple other observations were after about 1hr of use, the screen looked as if jagged , its hard to explain. Kind of like ur tv, if the reception isnt good (fuzzy u could say i guess). I killed a fully charged stock battery in 1hr and 45mins. Not running anything special just browsing the net, push mail on, and every so often a movie playing in the background. Anyone else try it, if so similar results?
Thx,
Mike

Update: 2.96 is out. Info from the Developer about battery!

So for those interested, I contacted the developer of XCPUScalar about the issues with battery/power consumption on the 6700 and using any OCing program.

It's not a total solution but the developer is aware of the issue and has made inroads into addressing it.

Quote:
If you got a builtin power manager use it instead and use XCPUScalar when you want speed and want to lock down on a specific speed. Most WM5 PDA's do not run at their rated speed and are usually in low gear most of the time because of the builtin power managers.

The PPC-6700 runs at 104MHz (idle speed) most of the time and yes it does have a power manager that cannot be turned off. So the 50-70 mah consumption is for 104Mhz speed, not the default 416MHz that you think its running at.

The ideal would be to disable the builtin power manager before running XCPUScalar if it was possible.

In 2.95 and above XCPUScalar will co-exist with the power manager if you can't disable it. I'm always looking for improvements in this area, in v2.95 I added a hibernation mode feature which allows XCPUScalar to hibernate and run passively until its needed again under certain conditions like the backlight dimming, talking on the phone, powering off, and other system events, etc. This mode consumes almost zero power, its like the product is not loaded or running.

As you can see I have made attempts in this area and will keep improving it. I do own the PPC-6700 PDA and reason XCPUScalar is very stable on it. --ImmierSoft
So I don't think it's as bad as we thought and might be worth giving the program a shot again.

Thanks! It is pretty neat to work with. Haven't played around with it enough to see what it can do, but from what I have seen, it works great!

Ok, I installed the latest version of this Xcpuscalar. There's three small icons show up on the bottom of the screen. When I hit the one on the left, a 'Soft Reset Warning' pop up and reads 'A soft reset will cause your Pocket PC to reboot, any resident data will be lost. Are you sure?'. Does this mean that every programs that I installed, including contacts will be lost?
