Ok, n00b question.

I know it supports m3a and m4a, but will this player allow me to listen to an *.m3a or *.m4a stream from a website?

Thumbs up Re: [7/14/09] - Nitrogen v1.1 (definitely my new mp3 player)

I'm also giving the "thumbs up" to this player! Open source under the GNU General Public License too! Way to give back to the community....

I can't wait to see what the future holds for this project and what future file formats will be supported. Great job all around!

Not a noob question, and Welcome! to the forums and Congratulations! on your first post.
As of right now, I don't believe it supports streaming. Streaming has been brought up a few times in the xda thread, and Nitrogen does play ogg files, so I don't think it's a far cry to say that we'll see streaming support in future versions. As of right now though, I believe that's the only feature this app is missing. Though someone else may be better suited to answer your question, as I never do any audio streaming myself.

Thanks, GoodGets.

Do you happen to know of an app that supports listening to a stream? I have police and fire/rescue scanners online that I would like to listen to while not at home.

Np, there's quite a few of 'em out there that support streaming, but probably the easiest way would be to use some of the apps that already come on your phone.

Windows Media Player supports streaming. Open it up, then Menu (right soft key), then "Open URL" and put in the url of your stream. Also, I think you can find the stream using your browser (opera, IE, etc) and when you click on it, you can select open from the pop up, and it will automatically use WMP. But, if you know the url, it may just be easier to type it in.

Also, HTC makes an app just for streaming. It even has a super catchy name. Are you ready for it? It's called Streaming Media. I know, I know, HTC really pulled out all the stops on that one. Also, I believe it comes on the stock ROM, and it's included in some of the custom roms. If you don't have it, you can find it easily via a google search. However, I don't really like it when someone just tells someone to google it, especially when they're a new member, so I'll help you out. There's a version posted in this thread, and you can find one here. There's a few builds out there, and I don't know which is the best or newest, so you still might wanna search on your own. Honestly though, you might even have the app already installed and might not even know it.

Hope that helped.

Re: [7/14/09] - Nitrogen v1.1 (definitely my new mp3 player)

Again, thanks for the info.

I tried both ways and they failed to work. Windows Media throws up an error stating that it doesnt support the filetype and StreamingMedia says invalid URL. These are the 2 links I am trying to stream:

http://icecast.scanamerica.us/missouri_stcharles2.m3u

http://icecast.scanamerica.us/missouri_stcharles1.m3u

Odd that the website says streaming links for cellphones and I cant get a WM phone to work on it...haha. I tried both entering the URL direct into WMP and opening the link via the browser. The latter option I tried shows that the file is being downloaded but it will not open a player.

Just wanted to chime in and add that I agree with the OP.
Nitrogen (also using v 1.1) is downright awesome.
Best MP I've used on a WinMo phone, or any phone for that matter.

Simple, intuitive, big buttons, low resource usage, and lots of depth to it as well if you feel like tweaking things.

Any 320x320 skins for this, I'd love to use it?
