GECKO installer - app "store" for Windows Mobile?

Found this great project a couple weeks ago that's being developed by a team over at XDA. I did a search for this in the software forum, but no dedicated threads came up; so I thought I'd post it for those that don't know about it (since some of us don't venture off to XDA). Very promising if thoroughly developed (It's still in beta).
-------------

THE IDEA

"Gecko is an application installer and manager for Windows Mobile. It is inspired from the Apple AppStore and the Ubuntu Package Manager.

Installing a Windows Mobile application is not always an easy process. There are .cab files, .exe files for the device, .exe files for the desktop, .msi installers and compressed files. You have to get the file from the internet, download it, connect your device to your computer then install your application. Once your applications are installed, you have no easy way to know if they are up to date.

Gecko aims to offer a quick and painless solution to these problems. It will provide an easy way to find, install and update your Windows Mobile applications in a convenient way without having to use a computer.

The application is under development and the team is always in need of fresh ideas. Feel free to leave a comment in the shoutbox if you want to share ideas!"

More info can be found at the original XDA thread here:

If you're interested, be sure to post your input on those sites!

This has been posted a few times before. The app is a great idea but the current version is ***. He has promised a much better release in a few days, so I recommend waiting for that.

Re: GECKO installer - app "store" for Windows Mobile?

yeah it's still early, but some of those screenshots in the xda thread look promising... the devs seem to like the input and gfx people are giving, so that's good. i hope enough people post their opinions there to make it as good as possible.... cause you're right, it's not going to fly in its current state. Lots of promise though!

Re: GECKO installer - app "store" for Windows Mobile?

Hello!
I'm Nick, developer for this application.

You are completely right about the first beta: It sucks. It was more of a tech demo than anything and barely shares any ressemblance with the upcoming beta. This time, all important features are added, all those launch errors were fixed, all resolutions are supported and it has a back button! There's no shiny graphics yet so the ugly white and blue interface is still there but even it was improved with support for all resolutions.

If there are developers reading this, submit your apps! The current list of apps is small and nowhere near what is needed for a successful rollout. Submit your apps here: http://getgecko.org/?page_id=57

Expect a release by the end of the day, everything's done and I'm testing for bugs

It's out now, so you can test it

I'd love to know what you think, even if it's not positive.
