If you do a hard reset you will return your phone to it's original factory settings. It will be as if you just took that bad boy out of the box. Syncing to your laptop/pc will only restore those items you established a relationship for.

You need something like Sprite, SPB Backup, etc. to back-up your entire phone (third party apps, docs, games, themes, etc.).

There are plenty of discussions that address various back-up applications.
