What's your FAVORITE Instant Messenger for the 6800/Mogul/Titan...?
I know we've covered many different instant messenger applications on different devices,
but now I'm curious to what everyone is using, specifically on the 6800/Mogul/Titan?
Looking forward to some great responses on this subject. Thanks! |
i use aim 2.0, b/c it's the only AIM app i know of, and it works, and all I use is aim, so that's why. didn't try out any others, and i WISH i had that palm IM app, but unfortunately, that isn't out for mogul.

I personally prefer palringo after trying most others.
I tried IM+, Agile and a slew of others. I most like palringo because it is reliable, serves multiple types of clients (yahoo, msn, aim etc) and best of all it's currently free (for how long I am not sure) that is my 2 cents after fighting many different clients and finding one that hasn't made me want to get rid of it yet. |

I have also tried IM+, Agile and a couple others. AGILE MESSENGER: I find myself extremely disappointed with the applications I've tried so far. When I had a Nokia 60 series phone, Agile messenger was great. The voice service worked, and I had very few problems with it. However, on the Pocket PC, I'm not a fan of Agile messenger at all. Very ugly interface, had many issues with the different features. IM+: I was hoping I'd like this application because there are many nice features and support for multiple clients. However, again I found the interface very basic, and buggy. SO WHAT AM I SPECIFICALLY LOOKING FOR?: I have a large messenger list of contacts. I use AIM, Y!, MSN and GChat. In each messenger, I have set up groups like friends, co-workers, family, etc. When I open an instant messenger client on my Pocket PC, I want there to be only ONE instance of each group, showing all the ONLINE contacts below that group from the different clients. So for example, if my mom is on Y!, and my dad is on MSN, and my bro is on AIM, I'd only know the difference by the icon next to them, they'd still be in the same "group". Example: Family- "Y! Icon" mom (online) "MSN Icon" dad (online) "AIM Icon" brother (online) Is this really too much to ask for...? Does anyone that works for these software companies have any experience in designing user interfaces and testing it with beta testers and actually USING the feedback from the beta testers (rather than using beta testing to just promote their upcoming product)? I just want a good instant messenger experience with my Mogul. It's text chat people - we should be beyond this now! :) Just my 2 cents worth I guess. |
my wife and i swear by Palringo the PTT feature saves us on minutes just as much as the IM aspect saves on text messages. To us its indespensable.

Here's a link for Palringo, so you don't have to sign up for the site.

Slick
Free (for now) Works pretty good, some bugs but not a big deal. Not too fond of the cleartype, but as I said it works and doesn't freeze on me when others have. I also enjoyed Agile, it was rock solid with great features, but IMO the price is a little too high for an IM app. |

back on topic: palringo is the shiet. i use it for AIM, MSN, and talk to my fellow PPCgeeks :) |
Palringo seems nice, but why cant I hide my offline buddies and why doesn't it respect my protocol specific groups :(
|
palringo all the way, iv been using it for months. its been free for awhile now and it just works with all the major IM providers... only complaint is once u close a message screen you lose the conversation... but its better than paying for something similar. I hope it remains free forever....
*edit* aug 25, 2009 and palringo is still the best, but there are other options now like nimbuzz, which is a lil slow.. but it has some nice features like skype, gizmodo, and yahoo voice support. like you can talk to ur yahoo friends with voice for free which is pretty cool.. but i don't know anyone who actually likes to talk over yahoo.... The OZ that comes with the sprint touch pro is good because it allows you to stay logged in even if the program is closed to save battery. then as soon as you receive a im the program automatically opens to receive the im. I guess this is called push IM and as far as I know its the only program that does this for windows mobile.. I mean IM+ clams to do this...but its not the same. IM+ can have ur IM's pushed to a email address, it doesn't push it back directly to your phone and open the program when its closed. |

and Palringo's current features will always be free ( http://forum.palringo.com/showthread.php?t=182 ) |

mundu
Just released a pocket pc version. I used them back in Treo 650 days. One time fee $11. It rocks as an IM program.
|
Why is there no Pidgin for PPC? Pidgin is lord of the multi-protocol messengers for windows and linux.
|
I use the messenger that came with my Touch. Since all my friends are on messenger, and it supports voiceclips, it does the job I guess.

I haven't seen it offered to consumers yet, just to businesses wanting to 'brand' their own IM client. Anyone else have more details regarding Mundu..? |
I primarily stick to Windows Live Messenger, because that's what I use at work, and it's what my friends and family are on. I keep AIM 2.0 as a backup for the handful of friends on there.
|
Mundu was a Handango Friday free app a few months back, little slow to start has file transfer via website link, does a lot for 11 bucks.

I use Slick. Works great, is slickly fast (like its title), has typing indication (which is really nice), supports away messages, and is free (at least for now). Get it at http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=slick

What about OctroTalk...?
Anyone have any experience with it? I just installed it on my Mogul, will know after the weekend how I feel about it. http://www.octro.com/images/picture-03.jpg |
I'm not a fan of Octrotalk only because I use AIM and it has to go through GTalk...so I find it kind of annoying as it's really a workaround, not a native AIM app. IM+ is very good, but way overpriced, and I wouldn't buy it. Slick is the best one I've used. I love it. I'm using the free beta version. I would gladly pay for it (granted of course it doesn't turn out to be overpriced like IM+).
|
It is a matter of what features you want, the interface you like, and what your willing to spend.
Yes, Octrotalk was a large group favorite as IM's go, free. Most people put up with the interface and using Jabber and the Legacy accounts. Palringo came out PTT and group chat and picture and voice the added limited IM support and most people stuck with it because of the versatality. I own Agile, IM+,Mudu,Web Messenger, I also use Octrotalk, Palringo, & Slick. I have tried the rest and then cleaned them off my phone for space.. Quote:

I've been using Octrotalk since June after trying most of the others. I love it.

I like it better than: Agile, IM+, Palringo, iMov, and VeriChat. http://bp0.blogger.com/_ZaGO7GjCqAI/.../octrotalk.png (not from my device, an already prepared image) |

Instant Messaging -which one are you using?
Verichat was the best, as far as I know...but they are long gone/.
I am coming from a Palm OS, so dont know much about Windows Mobile IM.. Which program offers ALWAYS ON, background connection? Thanks |
Re: Instant Messaging -which one are you using?
I personally have been using Palringo. They have a nice feature that you can have it power save the data connection when you haven't used it in a while, but it's always on.
|
Re: Instant Messaging -which one are you using?
does IM+ and Agile have background always on?
|

Re: Instant Messaging -which one are you using?
As far as I know it is still free....
This info can be found on their site yo... |
Re: Instant Messaging -which one are you using?
found the site, and the download link..just no mention of free or even a price.
thanks, ill give it a whirl |
Re: Instant Messaging -which one are you using?
for an always on/background connection and free try Slick. i use it and love it.
|
Re: Instant Messaging -which one are you using?
+1 for Slick. It is the most feature rich. You can even send and recieve files.
|
Re: Instant Messaging -which one are you using?
another +1 for slick. Most features, send/receive files, show when the other person is typing. Just enlarge the font and it makes the UI more more eye friendly and better looking. I hate palringo. IMHO it SUCKS
SOMEONE PLEASE GET OZ WORKING!!!!!!!!! Im sick of getting my battery raped just to IM!! |
Re: Instant Messaging -which one are you using?
I've been using octrotalk and it doesn't seem to have any issues with my phone.
|
Re: Instant Messaging -which one are you using?
nowadays i have less of a need for IM, but when i do need it i rely on palringo, it's never failed me! i consider it one of my must have apps.
|
Re: Instant Messaging -which one are you using?
Have used IM+ a ton, but quit IMing as much recently. Seems like I'm going to have to give Slick a try, though... downloading now.
