Hey Guys,
I thought I'd try out OctroChat since they added AIM/MSN support (exactly what I need ) But I am having trouble being able to choose my msn display name. This would normally not be a problem, but it is using my full real name to display instead of the one that was previously set on the msn servers. I have some people on my msn list that I would rather not have my full (or even half) name. Is there anyway to manually edit it? even something that just displays my msn email would be better than nothing :P

Thanks for your hard work octro, I love this program already! I would much rather pay for this over Agile Messenger which is what I was previously using (7 day trial). Especially since Octro combines all the protocols I talk on.

Actually, the way it is setup right now, it uses the display name from Google Talk, and the status from Google Talk, and pushes that on to MSN.

What does everybody else think -- how should this work?

Yeah, I realize that now, because my MSN account has never seen my real name, so I figured that it must be taking it from my google account. I for one would prefer to be able to set the status independent of my google account, especially considering I don't know anyone that uses gtalk so i'm only using it for aim/msn. And I would imagine if people use their real names for gtalk they wouldn't want their msn display name to become their real name. Thanks again for the hard work!

Do we have any idea what the cost of Octro will be when it comes off beta? Will it be subscription based or one-time-buy?

My problem is this:

I installed Octro & do not use GTalk. The first screen in Octro required a Gtalk username and password, so I signed up for GTalk using my regular email address firstname_lastname@yahoo.com & plugged this information into Octro. At the bottom of the screen it says:

Connecting...
loggin in...
logged out... (will retry)

and repeatedly cycles through this. I can't find anywhere to configure my MSN or Yahoo accounts either.

You were correct regarding the need for a Gmail address. Thanks.

However once I logged in I was immediately prompted with a popup for each one of my MSN buddies stating they wanted to add me as a buddy. That was a little disturbing.

Also I noticed that regardless of what I set my status to (Away or Busy), I still showed as available to my buddies. The Octro UI displayed correctly, but my status wasn't actually set.

The need for a Gmail address may be fine for us testing the product, but I think it would be a turn off to users having to pay for the product, especially since it appears something funny is going on in the background with all your buddies being renamed to name@octro.gmail.com or whatever it is.

I don't know, I am really anxious for the perfect IM solution, and will keep testing, but I'm sticking with Agile for now & am hoping that someone combines the best of Agile (tabbed chats, # of messages waiting next to each buddy, push to talk) with what used to be the best of Verichat (SMS proxy, send/receive files). BOTS IMHO should not be the primary focus for these developers. Create the best of class all in one IM solution first, then add those useless gizmos.

One thing I appreciated is that Octro didn't display that I was mobile. Displaying as mobile can be a deterrent to your buddies if they think you're on a cellphone.

Also gotta have Yahoo.
