RESOLVED: FWIW Lost cell radio after *228 option 2 on N2C 5055 rom

Just to post as I haven't seen this before, all was well on No2Chems 5055 and I goofed and tried the *228, option 2 to update roaming.

I immediately lost the cell radio (showed searching and never caught a cell tower) after the soft reset and couldn't make any calls. Tried re-entering my MSID/MDN with no help. Called VZW tech support and they couldn't help and offered to replace; I told them I would call back.

I relocked, reflashed to Verizon stock, and after a *228 option 1 for initial settings, had to call tech support to get another A key and was able to get back to stock with no calling problems.

Then I tried to get back to the latest 5055; unlocked, flashed the Sprint upgrade, flashed the latest No2Chem's rom, and when it was done, I lost the radio again...

Relocked and reflashed to Verizon stock and again had to do initial programming and had no A key. Got back to them and got another A key and again, I'm good to go on stock VZ rom. So....

DON'T EVER TRY *228 option 2 if you are on Verizon after upgrading to N2C 5055 (and possibly the other custom roms).

I'll work tomorrow to see how I can get back to the upgraded rom... I'm thinking I'll do (from VZ stock) a *228 option 2 to see if some bizzare setting that may have gotten chewed up when trying with the modded Sprint rom resets when trying from the VZ rom and then go through the upgrade process again...

Arghhhh......

I never had to do op 2 only op 1. Thanks for the heads up. Remember not to let sprint customizations to run after initial flash or it will put you on the sprint towers.

Re: FWIW Lost cell radio after *228 option 2 on N2C 5055 rom, ? resolved

1st update. Ran *228 option 2 from the stock ROM and it went fine. Hopefully this will restore any borked data that got stuck in the radio. I still can't figure out why a full ROM upgrade didn't erase everything but there must be some info that gets carried over...

After work today I'll try to upgrade to the Sprint ROM and then to N2C's 5055 and see if I keep my radio. Just for info, the wifi radio worked fine when the cellular radio pooped out. I didn't check the GPS...

Absolutely, I usually get it into the boot loader when it hits the "tap the screen" message.

keep us updated man. Thanks for the post.

I did the upgrade. I have a Verizon xv6800 with Nue's 5054 (didnt let customizations run). After the install I tried *228...nothing...I tired ##778..nothing. Then ##778# nothing. It said that it could not authenticate no matter what I put. Called Verizon Tech and they were stumped. Then after a soft reset. I got a text. Out of nowhere. Now I'm good. Wierd.

Well, I'm getting stumpped. I tried from functional stock rom (worked all day) and got the same loss of cellular radio... I've posted in the No2Chem's thread for some advice but I'll keep plugging along... I think I'll try sending myself a text if it fails again as I'm back to the stock rom now...

Re: FWIW Lost cell radio after *228 option 2 on N2C 5055 rom, ? resolved

Running stock now for a couple days and no problems. no2chem has released another ROM and I think what I'll do is a trial of DCD's kitchen bare bones install (no extras) with his VZW rom and see if this will allow the upgrade to the new radio. If it works I'll make another rom with more bells and whistles and see how it goes...

So as for the thread title, I guess partially resolved as I can use stock, but after running custom roms, its hard to be satisfied with stock.

On my last upgrade I decided to test a call w/o *228. It worked!!!! Have you just tried NOT dialing *228?

Also, if you wrote down the A Key and find yourself unauthorized, try using the last A Key you wrote down BEFORE calling tech support. I've heard a couple of times now that the A Key is the same until you call in and they reset it.

Thanks for the input Geckotek. I tried the *288 when it was searching and it pulled up a notification box stating "call lost" immediately. Interestingly, I could run *28802 as mentioned in a different thread and tried the quick disconnect but it didn't help so I tried again and listened and it went something like "Welcome to US Cellular, the number you have reached...." and I hung up. The searching dots continued beneath the antenna icon. I didn't even know we had US Cellular here in Cookeville.

I did try re-using the A key and it didn't work, even tried it with the second A key I got generated and no dice so I have to call every time I revert back to stock. No problem and the VZ techies are quite nice if you just ask for a new A key...

That's interesting. Well, here's one thing to consider trying....first, if you just let the phone sit for about 20 minutes or so, does the radio ever come up? When that first happened to me, I thought it was dead....but finally realized it just took A LONG TIME to come up.

Also, try other combinations of *2280x (start w/ 1 and move up.)

Edit: Wait a sec, then if you heard the Welcome to US Cellular greeting, your radio should have been online at that point?!?!

BTW, this is exactly what I experienced.....for about 20 minutes...then it finally connects.

Re: FWIW Lost cell radio after *228 option 2 on N2C 5055 rom, ? resolved

It was odd that I got the cell searching icon but did get US Cellular... Once you finally connected, Geckotek, did you keep the after soft reset or does it search again?

I think I figured out that the problem is a PRL problem. I checked the PRL after the going back to stock and *228 option 1. It was 51020. After backtracking, upgrading to the 3.16 radio and 5049 rom, I was getting a signal but with the roaming icon. Playing a hunch, I rolled back to a much earlier PRL (50720) and rand the new Sprint ROM and the 5055 and got a signal that wasn't roaming. Checked the EPST and showed VZ network and the old PRL.

Tried to place a call, got the VZ message that it couldn't verify the authentication. I'm currently on hold with tech support for a new A key but I'm up and running, getting a cellular signal and basically at the point I was at at the original upgrade. Once I get the A key, I'll post back.
