Instructions:

Windows
:
1. Extract zip to a folder
2. Ensure phone is in usb debugging mode and connected to your computer
3. Run the run.bat
4. Follow on screen instructions

Linux:
1. Extract zip to a folder
2. Ensure phone is in usb debugging mode and connected to your computer
3. Open a terminal and navigate to the unzipped folder
4. Type: chmod 777 run.sh
5. Type: ./run.sh
6. Follow on screen instructions

Mac OSX:
1. Extract zip to a folder
2. Ensure phone is in usb debugging mode and connected to your computer
3. Open a terminal and navigate to the unzipped folder
4. Type: chmod 777 run.sh
5. Type: ./run.sh
6. Follow on screen instructions

qbking77 has done a nice video tutorial on using Windows to root and install ClockworkMod using this method. You can see his video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymN1H2e9YMk
Thanks qbking77!

Notes:
1. Button mappings are slightly different from older versions of CWM. Volume buttons = Up and Down, Power or Camera = Enter, Capacitive Back = Back. Capacitive Home also works as enter but not correctly from the main menu so if you hit it and the screen disappears hit Capacitive Home again or Capacitive Back to bring it back.
NOTE: As of 3.1.0.1 the buttons have been sorted out.
2. KNOWN ISSUE: When invoked, reboot recovery requires a re-plug of the usb cable for adb to work again. Simply unplug the usb cable and plug it back in.
3. If the script does not reboot your phone at the end please run the script again. If it still doesn't work reboot the phone and run the script again.
4. USB Mass Storage can be mounted from inside of recovery. 'adb shell' into the phone and type 'mountums' MAKE SURE YOU SAFELY REMOVE/EJECT BEFORE RUNNING 'umountums' to safely unmount sdcard.
NOTE: As of 3.1.0.1 mounting from the menu works again!
5. There is a Go Back menu option but it must be enabled. See the post here.
6. VIRUS ALERT!!! rageagainstthecage may be detected by your antivirus program but it is NOT harmful to your computer. See this post for an explanation.

Thank you. I am aware that the Epic is only CDMA and Sprint specific. I just wanted to make sure that these procedures were for the CDMA

I figured it was since it's in the CDMA forum, wasn't absolutely positive though since the instructions didn't indicate specifically

Thanks again!

Can we get a One Click Root solution? A lot of what I read above is like reading Greek. XDA has a supposedly one-click root but its full of bugs and needs work. So far I haven't had any luck with it.

I have tried the one-click root on 2 PC's and 2 Macs....and I have struck out every time. I've posted my results in another thread before the re-org of the Galaxy S forums so I won't re-post everything but on the PC's I get this:

Quote:

exploit made by joeykrim and one click installer made by noobnl
Press any key to continue . . .
copy and run the exploit (may take 2 minutes)
'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

on pc are you on a win7/vista..if so are you running it as administrator?

Edit: Just looked at previous thread and saw you got XP..

lets try this...

go into command prompt..and type the following replacing ([PATH] with the path to where you extracted the 1 click root)

SET PATH=%PATH%[PATH]

Then run it.

Re: Permanent root and one click root for the Samsung Epic 4g

Thanks for the input gTen. I tried your suggestions but my result was basically the same thing. When I ran the one-click again I would get "no device found" message....so I'm thinking there must be some issue with the samsung's drivers not fully loading on either of the PC's (both running XP/32).

I repeatedly uninstalled/installed the driver but continued to get the same result. I do have admin privileges so I'm not sure what's going on.

I'll keep messing with it though.

Coz

The no-device found is progress..that means ADB is running..now one thing, when you uninstall the drivers and install them back then plug it in..do you have 3/4 usb drivers finish loading on your system? (you can see them in the right corner usually when installing or in device manager)..also on yoru device there is an icon that its runnign in debug mode when you plug in right?

No problemo :)

For reference if anyone in future gets the above issues:

The first issue most likely happened because when you ran it normally unlike running in command prompt depending on the configuration defaults to your home path rather then the actual path your in. So either running it directly in cmd prompt from the dir or changing the ENV path variable makes it work.

The 2nd issue is caused by drivers not fully loaded once you plug in the device or debug mode not enabled.

well either way on the wiki are direct links that should work fine.

Re: Permanent root and one click root for the Samsung Epic 4g

I had to do the path thing.
Otherwise it just said "error: device not found" or something like that.

revaaron 09-15-2010 04:29 PM

Re: Permanent root and one click root for the Samsung Epic 4g

actually, it's been sitting here: copy and run the exploit (may take 2 minutes)
for like 5 minutes.

Re: Permanent root and one click root for the Samsung Epic 4g

I guess I don't know how to tell 3/4 or 2/4.. the version is 5.2.0.4.. does that mean 2/4? if 2/4 means 5.2.0.4... then why say not say 5.2.0.4? is it suppose to be 5.3.0.4

lol...ok its not versions...it means 3 out of 4..when you plug in the USB into your port..if the device is new it starts to install the drivers into that USB port...you gotta way till at least 3 out of the 4 drivers are installed before running run.bat...if you don't wait you will get "device not found" error...

If you have another usb port, plug it in and wait till it finishes installing drivers for that usb port...the status should be on the bottom right notification on your pc when you click on it.

revaaron 09-15-2010 04:42 PM

Re: Permanent root and one click root for the Samsung Epic 4g

yeah, I don't see anything new there in the tray.
I see ADB Interface, modem interface, and a Android USB composite device under the dev manager, but when I run the run.bat
C:\Users\apepelis\Desktop\one click root exploit>run.bat
exploit and busybox made by joeykrim and one click installer made by noobnl
Press any key to continue . . .
copy and run the exploit (may take 2 minutes)

now I've plugged/unplugged a bunch of times and it's sitting at
run.bat
exploit and busybox made by joeykrim and one click installer made by noobnl
Press any key to continue . . .

I guess I'll just let it sit there for ever?
