Re: Thinking about the Omnia

Omnia has no IR, so bluetooth would be the only way to get a remote working. WM6.5 does make the Omnia *much* faster, but still, I wouldn't recommend it as a new phone, a year ago, definitely I would have though.

You have one person stating it does but has never answered questions about his comments. Also, IR is line of sight. So, without a port how is the IR going to work?

Re: Thinking about the Omnia

If the Omnia has IR, I don't think that it is consumer grade model to allow it to work as a remote.

FWIW, I don't believe my VZW i910 has IR.

Re: Thinking about the Omnia

I was looking at the Omnia for my daughter, but when I went to Verizon they said I had to also buy the $30/month data plan. Since at this point she'd only use the functionality of the phone and the texting, I was wondering if there are any unlocked images would allow the phone to work on Verizon without having to purchase the data plan. Are other carriers doing this too (requiring a data plan for a phone even if you're not going to use it)?

Yeah, I think AT&T was the last holdout on the forced data plan issue and they adopted it a month or so ago, I told. My wife would like something similar to the Omnia and I think she'll end up with a "feature phone". One that doesn't run WM, but just has a keyboard (virtual or real) for texting.

Re: Thinking about the Omnia

Forced Data plans? Guess I've been oblivious since I have had a data plan for my phone for several years - didn't realize they were forcing people to buy a data plan for a phone. Since the phone part of the device doesn't need a data plan to work, how can they get away with this? Seems like their extorting money for non-required functionality.

Re: Thinking about the Omnia

Even many of their feature phones like the LG Versa or Samsung Rouge now require the $10 a month feature phone data plan or move up to the $15 plan. Then of course you can pay extra on most of their phones for visual voice mail, navigation, or their vcast service.

Re: Thinking about the Omnia

I don't mind paying extra if I want the feature, but forcing me to buy something I don't need just to have the phone - that's ridiculous! What a scam.

And all of the carriers do this now? BTW, thanks for listening to my rant and letting me know what's going on. Much appreciated.
