Re: Locate Me, Bing, CF03, and YOU!

yeah, I get 3-5 sats, not the 8-12 that my Holux BT unit usually picks up, so accuracy is a little low.. but for general purposes its fine, I have a TOMTOM for the van now so don't need this for super accurate driving directions.

I have GPS set to intermediate drive in the settings.
I opened the maps first and checked off "track me using GPS" waited for it to get a lock, then tried locate me, and it has worked each time since. (though I haven't moved beyond the house today)

Re: Locate Me, Bing, CF03, and YOU!

I got GPS to work for my phone with google maps, bing, and amaze. But it didn't work at first until I did this. I used total commander and went to HKLM/ControlPanel/GPS Settings. I deleted the redirect and let the program sit for 2 minutes to let the changes take effect. Then I did a soft reset and all my GPS programs were working.

Re: Locate Me, Bing, CF03, and YOU!

The issue isn't with GPS folks... Its the "Locate Me" option in Bing... That feature has nothing to do with GPS, as it pulls tower information to get the coordinates...

Re: Locate Me, Bing, CF03, and YOU!

Locate me doesn't work for me in Bing, but Google Map's My Location will pull up my general location in a few seconds, unless I'm buried deep in the middle of the building (my work office is made out of cement and pretty much kills all cell signals).

I think people are getting confused about what Locate Me, GPS, and aGPS are. Correct me if I'm wrong but:
Locate me/My Location: Uses cell tower triangulation to get the general area that you're in. Doesn't need or use a GPS chip at all. See http://www.google.com/mobile/gmm/mylocation/ for a short explanation.
GPS: Uses signals from satellites to find your current location very precisely. Can take a few minutes to lock on to the signals and triangulate your position.
aGPS: A combination of above - uses cell towers to get your general location, so the GPS chip knows which GPS satellites and signals to expect, resulting in a quicker lock.

With the original VZW rom, we didn't have access to any of the above location techniques (well, other than Skywing's programs which didn't really work right on the Omnia, or VZNav). With CC20, we gained access to plain GPS, but still no aGPS or Locate Me. With the newest rom, both GPS and Locate Me now work, and maybe aGPS (not entirely sure about that one yet).

When Google Maps first fires up it tries to get your location based on Cell tower triangulation. This, AFAIK, has nothing to do with GPS. If you shut off the GPS access in phone preferences and tell Google Maps NOT to use the GPS, it will still locate you this way (at least it does for me). When you tell it to use the GPS, this is when it talks to the GPS chip and GPS satellites. Now if Verizon was nice enough, this is also when aGPS would kick into effect, giving us very quick lock times.

Go into settings. Under the Personal tab select phone then goto the services tab and pick GPS. Change the setting from 911 Only to Location on and soft-reset.

Re: Locate Me, Bing, CF03, and YOU!

The "Track me using GPS" in Bing works. But the "Locate Me" doesn't. At least for me.

Maybe that's why the confusion over whether or not Bing works - one option does one does not.

I'm fresh to the new official ROM from the factory ROM (couldn't risk voiding my warranty since the phone is through a business.) I'm not sure if it's just mine or all Omnias but I'm a little disappointed in the GPS. I only ever get a max of 5 sats locked on which GcZII shows as 100ft accuracy. With my BT-359 bluetooth GPS I usually get around 10 sats and at least 30ft accuracy. Is the internal GPS hard limited to only 5 sats or is it just my phone doing that?

Having the same issue with Bing. Has me in the middle of the Atlantic. Google Maps acquires a lock in a few seconds.
