Device Memory vs Phone Storage

is it better to install programs on to the phone's normal memory or on the storge area? I usually install it on the device memory, and keep all my music on my 4gb storage card. So the extra 8gb is just there. Just wondering if there was an advantge to on another and where does everyone else install there programs
