Re: Noob needing some direction...

OK, I've downloaded the two rar files and now I need to find a program to open them.
In the meantime, a question about the cf03 version...
First in the "first time flashing..." post the instructions to check for cf03 don't seem to be correct. They read "...menu->settings->system->about." But as you wrote earlier in this thread it should be "menu->settings->system->version" This is perhaps a minor point but I would normally run away from instruction with a mistake in the first paragraph. I'm not trying to be ungrateful, just thinking this might need to be corrected for any other clueless noobs like me.

That said, I'm not running but to complicate things as much as possible I skimmed thru the whole Yardie wm6.5 thread and have a better understanding of how this works.
Then I came across the news that Verizon has recently updated the software with some patches one of which improves call quality: http://fwd4.me/AsG
Should I be upgrading this first or is it included or is it moot?

Re: Noob needing some direction...

Next stumble...
Clipped from the First Time Flashing instructions:

Step 2- Flashing your CF03 i910 with a new ROM

1. If you haven't done so, install Samsung USB driver from HERE

I've extracted these files but what do I do with them? I'm guessing I'm to install one of the driver files on my phone but which one?

2. Upload and extract UMDL from HERE

I assume this also goes on my phone but only after the above drivers are installed.

3. Download and extract your ROM of choice, It will be a FlashXXX.bin file

This was in two parts. Using 7-zip I extracted Part 2 onto my desktop as a bin file but with part 1 I get the following message:
CRC failed in flash-yadie-23559-original.bin. File is broken

I tried re-downloading it but got the same result.

Re: Noob needing some direction...

Yes, you should be checking under "Version", not "about". About shows the version of the Windows OS, but Version shows the Samsung specific information.
I would download and run the update tool from Samsung because it's best to be on the latest version. If I haven't mentioned already, if you get tired of the custom ROMs and want to revert back to the preinstalled software (i.e. with all of the Samsung addons), you can always run this tool again to do so. http://www.samsung.com/us/i910/softwareupdate
Extract the driver RAR file into a folder somewhere on your PC and run the setup.exe file. This allows your PC to interface with the phone when you connect it. I would restart after running just to ensure they got installed properly.
UMDL also runs from your PC; this is where you select the ROM to be flashed.
I posted the ROM file here on my own web server - I flashed this exact file to my phone and it worked fine. I know those two part RARs can be a bit temperamental.
I'll give some of my flashing steps too, for good measure: power off the phone, disable ActiveSync on the PC (right click icon near the clock, connection settings, uncheck allow usb connections), open UMDL, click PDA, select bin file you downloaded, click Detect, plug in phone to PC and power it on. The phone's screen will show the same Samsung Omnia logo but will show some messages on the screen. Flashing process will take 2-3 minutes at most.

Dang it. I thought I was going to be able to go without any more questions but when I follow the update instructions I find that I would be updating to DC22. http://fwd4.me/Azw
Isn't that the alternative to CF03? Doesn't that mean that the Yardi4life rom would no longer be the right one?

No, I hadn't realized that. I thought this process was irreversible. Thanks for that tip.

This is clearer than the First time flashing instructions, thanks. I'll see if I can understand the CF03/DC22 issue but if you can explain that to me I'd be grateful.

Re: Noob needing some direction...

The CF03 and DC22 are two different updates; CF03 was the original update released last year and DC22 is the second update after CF03. Basically, they are like Windows service packs, XP has 3 of them, starting with SP1, then SP2 and finally SP3.
You don't have to update to DC22 but I would just for the sake of being up to date. It is not necessary to have CF03 to run the Yardi4life ROM either, I updated to DC22 and installed that ROM and it worked.

Re: Noob needing some direction...

OK, I was somehow under the impression that the roms were update specific. I'll start going thru the whole process beginning with the samsung update.
Thanks, I'll report back....

Re: Noob needing some direction...

Report: Success!
There are a few questions however....
First one is that I couldn't help messing with the phone as soon as it was a phone again and moving thru settings I came across the calibration tool. So of course I calibrated it but I can't get it to stop. It just keeps on flashing numbers (mostly between 3 and -3) but what is it doing at this point? Is it supposed to run all the time in the background?

Re: Noob needing some direction...

Are you talking about the HTC Emulator calibration? You shouldn't need to open that unless the rotation sensor starts getting funky. The screen calibration is under start > settings > system > screen > align screen.
Great to hear that it worked out.

That's what I'm talking about. Too late, I already opened it and now it won't close.
I've researched it and downloaded a file: HTCemupanel.zip which is supposed to add a close button but I can't figure out how to sync the phone to the pc anymore.
I thought to do a hard reset...would that be a bad idea? I dont' have any info on there I care about yet.
If it's a good idea, how do I find out my device lock code?

Re: Noob needing some direction...

I did the hard reset and that fixed my problem. I've restored my backed up info successfully and spent more time adjusting settings, and all is going well at this point. Thanks so much for your help, I couldn't/wouldn't have done it without you!

As was predicted, I have a better understanding of how mobile devices work and what it means to flash a rom, etc. I'm hoping the predictions arent' 100% accurate and I don't become addicted to flashing roms because it's taken a ton of time already! That said, I'm wondering if I'll keep this rom. There's a couple of features that I'd like to change but I don't know if they're integral to the rom or customizable features. The new rom doesn't come with a manual...

Is there a way to disable the slide-to-unlock thing? It's much easier to me to just hold the end button down to unlock but that seems to not work now and I haven't found any setting to change that.

Also when ending a call, pressing the end button simply turns the display back on and it takes a second press of the end button to end the call. Previous phones I've had were such that pressing the end button during a call both turned the display back on AND ended the call.

Next, can I get missed call/missed text, new voicemail notifications to stay on the screen til I manually clear them?

I tried to go into setting/personal/phone/alerts to see if there was a setting there but not so. While there I enabled a connect tone option but now I can't get that window to close no matter what options I choose. I can't get to any other setting/personal/phone options because that window always comes up. Is this just a bug in the rom?

There's other glitches it seems but for a last question, will spb shell still play nice with this rom? I'm not sure I want spb shell but I'd like to try it again on the new rom if it won't mess things up.

John
