Next, can I get missed call/missed text, new voicemail notifications to stay on the screen til I manually clear them?

I tried to go into setting/personal/phone/alerts to see if there was a setting there but not so. While there I enabled a connect tone option but now I can't get that window to close no matter what options I choose. I can't get to any other setting/personal/phone options because that window always comes up. Is this just a bug in the rom?

There's other glitches it seems but for a last question, will spb shell still play nice with this rom? I'm not sure I want spb shell but I'd like to try it again on the new rom if it won't mess things up.

First off, slow down. In my head, that post sounded like it was spoken by a person that had just gotten finished running a 10K.

Next, as I tell my users, STOP CLICKING. It sounds like you're jumping into areas and changing options that you have no idea about, and that keeps glitching you up. You've done it twice on this page of the thread alone.

That said, welcome to the world of flash addiction. Eventually you'll find a "happy place" and slow down, but then after a few weeks/months you'll get back into it.

To answer a lot of your questions, I offer this:
  • Do everything again from scratch.
  • Back up your stuff. Plenty of good programs to back up everything with; personally, I own a copy of RESCO backup.
  • Load the original ROM, following the instructions while paying close attention to what's going on.
  • Figure out which overlay ROMs/addons to use
  • DOCUMENT EVERYTHING as far as which versions of addons you load, the order you load them in, etc.
  • Get the phone to where you want it
  • Lather, rinse and repeat

You can't be afraid to back up, load ROMS and restore. If you are, you'll be uncomfortable jumping around in the ROM looking at things and experimenting, which is what you're doing.

I'm sure someone has a suggestion for a home screen app that keeps track of all of your notifications. Just look around a bit and experiment. If you screw something up, who cares? You'll have your list to go by, and a solid backup of your information.

When you get comfortable, just load up the ROM you like, add the apps and such, set everything the way you like and cook up your own version! That's probably the answer you're looking for, because it seems that you're torqued by all the little details and probably hate to start from scratch. That would be my suggestion: learn to cook up your own flavor so your restoration time is minimal.

Krushr, I appreciate the help I've gotten from everyone on this board and I appreciate your advice as well but I don't think it's accurate to characterize me as breathlessly "jumping into areas and changing options that you have no idea about". Look at the times on my posts...it's not like I'm posting every 3 minutes. There's a lot of "research" time on my part in between post. And while I opened the HTCemu calibrator with a misunderstanding what it is, I don't think that caused any problem in itself. It seems to me that there's a bug in the rom that keeps the program from closing properly. That seems to be the case with at least one other option menu afaikt.
I have installed only a few programs onto the phone and nothing out of the ordinary; Opnmarket, Opera mini and PIMbackup. Other than that, all I've added are a few mp3 ringers and a theme called Sprint.tsk. It's possible one of those are causing a problem but they're pretty basic stuff.

I feel (as I laid out above) that I'm not that far from scratch now. I do feel more comfortable making changes now that PIMbackup has worked once for me. I think I chose that one as a free backup rec from somewhere on the boards but if there's better backup programs, I'm all for it.
I"m about worn out on reading about this stuff though and definitely need to take a break for a few days now that the phone's functional. I *would* like an easier way to unlock the phone...

I'll look into that at some point.

You're probably right there. I feel like I just want simple but I'm finicky about the details. I've never had the "perfect" cell phone and I thought when I got a smart phone I'd be able to tune it to my ideal. That might be true, but it's a lot more work than I thought it would be.

If "cooking up a rom" means writing code, I don't think I'll ever go there. If it just means starting with Someone else's basic rom and adding details....well that's what I thought I was doing. I guess I just need to experiment with other roms to find the base I want. Are there any basic roms that you'd recommend that are tried and true (and don't have that slide-to-unlock feature)?
I'd really be happy to not pay for spb shell too but so far that interface seems most user friendly to me. Are there any roms that are similar?

Thanks,
John

Re: Noob needing some direction...

I'd say you're definitely not getting in too deep or going too fast. So far I think you're learning quite a bit as you said and just poking around to see what various things do, nothing wrong with that. Things can get a bit complicated and overwhelming but still, doesn't really matter since there's always a way to get out. As for backup programs like Resco, I don't see the point; it seems that most users of these tools never recommend doing a full restore anyway, which seems to be the main selling point for these programs. Free tools like PIM Backup work for organizer data, and regular files should be saved on My Storage so they won't be erased on a hard reset or ROM flash. Additionally, a tool called Sashimi can facilitate reinstalling CAB files if you have many of them. On to your questions!

As was predicted, I have a better understanding of how mobile devices work and what it means to flash a rom, etc. I'm hoping the predictions arent' 100% accurate and I don't become addicted to flashing roms because it's taken a ton of time already! That said, I'm wondering if I'll keep this rom. There's a couple of features that I'd like to change but I don't know if they're integral to the rom or customizable features. The new rom doesn't come with a manual...

Is there a way to disable the slide-to-unlock thing? It's much easier to me to just hold the end button down to unlock but that seems to not work now and I haven't found any setting to change that.

-I'm glad to be of assistance. Hopefully you're already reaping the benefits and experiencing a little turbulence along the way, since that's what happens to all of us. Surely I think calling the flashing process "addicting" is a bit much, since it's very possible to stick with one version indefinitely rather than having to install the latest version (which may not have any visible changes).
-In this specific ROM, slide to unlock always comes up when you shut the screen off; others have varying options for this feature and others which, most of the time, you have to discover on your own. Start > Settings > Lock will allow you to extend the timeout before locking, which I like, but Settings > Personal > Buttons, Wake up tab (tap arrows at top of screen or swipe finger across screen left to right to change tabs) and uncheck the box "when woken up, lock device". This will not disable the swipe to unlock, but now you can choose to lock when you want to by holding End.
-I don't know about the end button functionality. I'll look around but nothing I can think of off the top of my head.
-Notifications for text, email and voicemail should stay until you read the messages or listen to and save/delete the voicemail.
-All of the cooked ROMs have that bug where going into phone options will not allow you to close the window. The only solution is to change one of your side buttons to the <OK/Close> function: Start > Settings > Personal > Buttons > pick any one of the four and from the menu at the bottom of the screen, find OK/Close near the top of the list.
-I don't use SPB Shell but I assume that it will work fine.

Another thing, I reflashed to the ROM I recommended (23559 Original) and my WiFi doesn't work. I changed to the Modified version and it works fine there. So if you are on the original, check to see if WiFi shows up in the wireless manager, else you might want to go to the modified version which I posted here.

That feature alone will probably have me looking for another rom. I've tried to get used to it but it's pretty rare that I get it on the first try unless I have a stylus/pencil in my hand. I'm usually trying to do it one-handed.
I'm not fond of the sliding "widget selector" on the home page either. Simple static icons work better for me. Maybe I'm too clumsy to get the slide thing.

These are all things I can live with or work around. The button tip worked great. Short press on the camera button now closes programs. Thanks.

Shell seems to work but it's less important now that other things are improved.

My wifi is working fine so I must have the modified ver.
There are some other bugs it seems though. Most annoying for me right now is that I've set a tone to let me know when a call has connected and I chose a tone called "default" which is a short beep. However, what plays instead is one called "connecttone" which is a louder annoying high pitched tone that just about hurts my ear. I've checked the setting but still the wrong tone plays. I realize I might be able to "fix" this by finding the connnecttone file and replacing it with a different sound file. However, that issue leads me to another question...
When I sync my phone to pc (usb/activvesync) I can't seem to see most of the files on the phone. when in the phone I can see connecttone under windows but I can't get to the windows folder on the phone from the pc it seems. The pc seems to start in the my documents folder and the windows folder is one level up from that. Is there something I can do to access the other folders on my phone via my pc?

I'm also having a devil of a time seeing the phone in the sun. Is that an Omnia thing or maybe a touch screen thing? I never remember having such an issue with other phones. I'm outdoors a lot for work and play so that's important to me. Today I got a call and couldnt' see who it was from. I can brighten the screen some but I didn't want to run it bright all the time and the auto-brightness feature doesn't do much as far as I can tell.

Thanks, bedtime for me...

This was just me needing sleep I think. I realized what I was doing and can now access the other files on the phone.... Duh.

Yeah, this tends to be a problem with PDAs. I did purchase a "ClearTouch anti-glare" screen protector that helps with this (as seen at http://www.boxwave.com/products/clea...-i910_3399.htm). This one has helped, although there are quite a few other companies you could try. Also, it's not perfect as I still get a bit of a glare, but it's a huge improvement over a "cheap" screen protector.

I'd already installed one of the steinheil crystal screen protectors. I guess I should have gone for the "anti-glare" type but I was afraid it would make the screen less clear.

Re: Noob needing some direction...

This AM I had some time so I flashed back to the DC22 rom to refresh my mind on what the original base is. Is it beneficial in any way to start from the offical DC22 update rom when flashing a custom rom?

Anyway my thought is that now I'll look for a very basic rom based on DC22 that I can then add features to. Is that likely to work well? If I add a bunch of disparate components am I just likely to come up with conflicts? I'm talking about custom dialer, alarm clock, theme, and the like.

Looking at the roms on Modaco it's hard for me to tell which ones are stable, bare bones roms that I can customize.
I'm assuming that I need a DC22 based rom but while at Modaco I now see reference to DC23....is there a new update?

Couple more questions; is there a way to disable the auto-lock feature on the phone? I'm talking about the whole device lock not the keypad lock that kicks in while in conversation. I'd rather just choose to lock it manually but I've searched for some time without finding a solution to this one (though I find others have been asking the same question)

Also, the phone keeps coming up with some kind of alert in the middle of the night. Last night about 3AM. I'm thinking it's telling me the batt is charged. I can't find a way to turn that off. Under "Sounds and Notifications" there is the "enable sounds for events (warnings, system events)" but I have no idea what warnings and events they're talking about. Do I get to choose which warnings and events I would want an alert for? I realize there's some options for this under the "notifications" tab but it seems like an incomplete list.

Thanks,
John
